Whenever I see high spiky heeled and pointed toed shoes worn by female TV newsreaders and presenters, I hear my DM warnings in my head.
They will ruin your feet, give you varicose veins, are bad for your posture and are a throw back to a time when, God forbid, women were subservient to men.

Was she right? I can't bring myself to like the look of them and feel that the women in the public eye should set a better example.
I admit my DD, in her 30s, wears high heels for special occasions and seems to be able to walk in them. What do others think?

I, e been wearing 3 inch + high heels since my early teens ,my feet are perfect according to the podiatrist I see for my diabetic check up ,my posture is fine and the only time I wear flat shoes is for exercising..or barefoot at home I have a friend who is a physio and she says she would rather see women walking in high heels than shuffling along in ballet flats ,which are really bad for posture .

I heard that ballet flats are bad for the feet because they're difficult to keep on and the wearer screws their toes up to keep them on.

I can't wear high heels any more although I did, but my feet hae been terrible since I was a child (hereditary) - but what teenager in the 1960s wanted to wear sensible lace-ups?

Of course, they'd be fine now! Especially with a dress.

Barbie dolls have moulded high heeled feet. We don't.

However I didn't feel very clever today at the Glasgow meet up. I slipped and landed quite heavily on my backside. I was wearing my sensible boots and hadn't had any alcohol 😅

One of my colleagues was an occupation therapist and had to have her achilles tendons stretched due to wearing very high heels too often. What I have noticed with those of very high heel wearing is them stabding with feet wide apart as if to help balance. One of the presenters on Strictly very guilty of this.. If we were meant to walk on our toes why do we have flat feet and toes for gripping.

I wear what is most comfy, I did wear heels and wedges when young but my feet were not happy, quite often after a night dancing I had to put plasters on the back of my heels where the skin was raw. Now I don’t wear any shoe that has a heel or is stiff leather. Sketchers for me all day long and all night long if necessary. In cold wet weather I have hotter comfort concept soft leather shoes, flats of course.

yes I find a woman in stiletto heels a signifier of a woman concerned how to present herself to a males sexual fantasy, in other words, cringeworthy. I love to see a woman in boots. It shows confidence.

I can only look on in envy at anyone who can wear heels . Post foot surgery I’m restricted to to flat shoes and boots .

There is a BBC lunchtime newsreader who always looks as though she is off to the beach. Capri pants and high heels don’t seem appropriate when reporting on the horrific things going on in the world. Rita Chakrabattee( ? spelling) is always immaculate. If we are distracted by the clothes , we are not listening to the news. I delivered training courses and keynote speeches at conferences for 25 years, I dressed smartly. I didn’t wear jazzy patterns or ‘loud’ colours.

I think they look great and I wish I could join them. My daughter takes great delight in telling me that high heels are good for you after years of me advising her to wear flatties ( as a teenager)

I love shoes, wish I could afford them and most of all, wish I could get my plates into winklepickers again !

I have a prolapsed womb and find iI feel much more supported in 2 or 3 inch heels than absolutely flat shoes or slippers.

Mojack26 Fri 21-Nov-25 15:52:05

What example should they be setting? When I wasin my teens,20's 30's,40's,50's I wore high heels.....because I could and I liked them no reason other than that! Wish I still could.. as a PE teacher I lived in tracksuit and trainers si loved it when I could wear high heels and get dressed up! Each to their own

Shoes - are a personal choice. I’d still wear the ridiculously high ones if I wasn’t afraid of falling over.
We call them^Car to the bar or not very far shoes^ but one DGD who is on her feet all day can manage with them all day and still go out in them in the evening.

i feel as though the gains made in the 70s in terms of outward equality have been largely lost
I was a feminist before the word was coined.
I shaved my armpits, I wore beautiful high heals and I didn’t burn my bra.
My attitude was in my head, not what I looked like which was what i wanted to look like not what others dictated.

knspol Fri 21-Nov-25 15:32:54

I used to wear high heels without any problems but then gradually changed over to flats without really realising it. Now I don't think I could wear heels without falling flat on my face - especially with my bunions!

Granmarderby10 Fri 21-Nov-25 15:31:03

Why does there have to be such extremes? ie. a butch pit boot type shoe versus a heel so high you’d need to be built like a Barbie doll and attached to the box she came in with a wire - I wish there was a real choice of lower heals.
There are those completely flat ballet slipper types (imo horrid) they actually hurt me to look at them!
Or sneaker type trainers(too flat for me) or the more modern built-up type of trainers like a platform or wedge, very comfortable for me…but not quite the look I’d really like to go with a skirt or dress. Crocs also very comfy and stable.

I would love to see some lace up brogues with a chunkier squarer heel or some bar type shoes with a lower heal maybe in patent or suede.
The sheer volume of fab but ludicrously high heels on charity shop shelves tells me all I need to know.
They are for posing in for one night only perhaps at a party, reading the weather, or for the Princess of Wales who probably has them bespoke made (I certainly would if I were her)🙂

Grantanow Fri 21-Nov-25 15:19:51

I rather suspect high heels = high status for the newsreaders and presenters.

handbaghoarder Fri 21-Nov-25 15:13:58

And then we have Robert Peston with his suit, tie and trainers ..

If I were their age, I would be wearing those heels too.

High heels suit my back better than flat shoes, even now.

A woman is only subservient if she allows herself to be. It has nothing to do with clothes or shoes, as long as she wears what she wants to and feels good in.

Absolutely 👏👏👏

Grandma70s Fri 21-Nov-25 15:07:29

I’ve always thought high heels look silly, and have never worn them. If others want to, that’s their business.

Does height have anything to do with it? I’m quite tall, and I feel that if I was short I might like to give myself a bit of extra height by wearing heels.

Bazza Fri 21-Nov-25 15:04:54

The lovely Nina Warhurst often wears really high heels when she’s reading the news, which look as if they don’t fit her and she just looks uncomfortable in them. I really like her presentation though, and can’t help wondering if the minute the camera has shut down she will kick them off. I wore high heels every day when I was young without a thought or sore feet. I have no bunions or corns. These days a definite no no.

I see you let Huw Edwards off the hook by only referring to female broadcasters.

Essexgirl145 Fri 21-Nov-25 14:20:21

What about those beautiful African ladies swaying along with a basket on there head, their feet are bare and flat.

I also wonder at the very tight ‘spray on ‘ dresses some of the female weather forecasters wear and think a size larger would look much better, though I suppose I am just old fashioned.

I could have composed this post, silverlining. The presenters wear attractive, clearly expensive dresses, but they are, as you say, invariably skin tight, and when they reach to point to the weather charts I do wonder if there will be a ripping noise. My OH is probably bored to tears with hearing me say 'That would look so much better in a slightly larger size'.

missdeke Fri 21-Nov-25 14:10:41

I can't wear high heels but I quite like the look of them, sometimes. I don't like the really high spikey heels as I think they spoil the look of the calves, it makes them look really muscley and ugly.

TwinLolly Fri 21-Nov-25 13:55:40

I can't wear high heels for long so I tend to go for a small to medium heels if I'm going to work or anywhere special. I tend to live in flipflops whenever I can.

Fortunately I don't have bunions. They were the bane of my mother's life, resulting from her pointy toe high heels. She struggled with shoes as a result. She had an op later in life to get rid of the bunions but it wasn't the same.
