Seems to me that being seen on tv reading the news is an ideal time to wear high heels. It is for a short period of time and as soon as your stint in the public eye is over, you nip away from the caameras, throw off your heels and put some trainers on

I, e been wearing 3 inch + high heels since my early teens ,my feet are perfect according to the podiatrist I see for my diabetic check up ,my posture is fine and the only time I wear flat shoes is for exercising..or barefoot at home I have a friend who is a physio and she says she would rather see women walking in high heels than shuffling along in ballet flats ,which are really bad for posture .

I agree about ballet flats. I ended up with plantar fasciitis from wearing them at work. Arch supports sorted that out. I’ve never been able to wear heels because of my bunion sad.

I think that after retirement I did a huge amount of walking, gardening and indoor stuff so wearing of high heels didn’t really happen, and very high heels were not terribly fashionable for a time.

I now no longer have any desire to wear very high heels or indeed moderately high heels - just say 2-3” if I have an outfit that complements them. Even then I would choose flattish heels more often than not.

Not sure it matters terribly tbh😊

I suppose it’s what people are comfortable wearing. I am unable to wear high heels as I have very weak ankles but am perfectly fine with other people doing so. I don’t think all news readers wear high heels. I have seen Fiona Bruce in smart trainers. Honestly, it’s a free world.

We weren't born wearing anything, Grammaretto.

Are you advocating nudity?

Grammaretto Thu 20-Nov-25 15:23:33

How can that be true Paddyann? We weren't born wearing high heels.
So the idea that flat shoes are bad for posture is ludicrous.

I do agree that ballet flats are most suited to dancing ballet and not for shuffling but the newsreader I am thinking of really does not look at all comfortable in her high heels.

Wearing high heels comfortably has more to do with the shape of the foot (high arches) and correct posture. I wore high heels throughout my teaching career, went to Barn dances and all sorts of other dances and managed without trouble, and have only recently started wearing low heeled, flat shoes most of the time. Nothing to do with back-ache , more balance.

They will ruin your feet, give you varicose veins, are bad for your posture and are a throw back to a time when, God forbid, women were subservient to men.

How silly.

I used to wear very high heels in work but I have bunions now caused by the silly shoes.
I'm glad to see my GD and other young women wearing much more sensible shoes.

I also wonder at the very tight ‘spray on ‘ dresses some of the female weather forecasters wear and think a size larger would look much better, though I suppose I am just old fashioned.

Grammaretto Thu 20-Nov-25 13:59:00

I was told the opposite Magenta
The pelvic tilt, I was told, would leave a legacy of backache.

I'm not suggesting that we shouldn't ever wear heels but there's a time and place.

I'm calling a couple of dances at our ceilidh dance group tonight. I shall wear my furlined boots and change into flat sketchers slip-ons for the dances. I will be surprised if anyone wears heels.
My DD was a bridesmaid at her DB's wedding. I don't think she's forgiven the woman who trod on her bare foot with a spiky heel.
They are also dangerous.

I’ve always thought WHY!! Totally unnecessary and to me normal height heels or flats do the same job and look just as smart. Don’t get me started on the figure hugging dresses!

I was once told, I don't know if it is true, that some women find high heels more comfortable - something to do with the tilt of of their pelvis.

I can still dance the night away in heels, and did so the other week.

Cabbie21 Thu 20-Nov-25 13:27:57

Yes, there seems to be an expectation that they put on a pair of heels to read the news. Really annoys me, though I do like to see presenters looking smart - and speaking well.
One of our local presenters says ‘ the afternoon’ with a glottal stop between the words rather than ‘ thee afternoon’, similarly for other nouns starting with a vowel. She ends with ‘ Have A lovely afternoon’.

I am 68 and still wear high heels.

I was told by my physio that varying the height of the heels you wear is good for your ligaments. So that is what I do, some days flats or trainers, others medium height and/or wedges along with high heels

I think shoes make the outfit, and they must be clean.

Grammaretto Thu 20-Nov-25 13:16:48

Whenever I see high spiky heeled and pointed toed shoes worn by female TV newsreaders and presenters, I hear my DM warnings in my head.

Was she right? I can't bring myself to like the look of them and feel that the women in the public eye should set a better example.
I admit my DD, in her 30s, wears high heels for special occasions and seems to be able to walk in them. What do others think?
