What fashion items remind you of your parents?

Cardigans. My mum would knit cardigans for all of us and anyone else who needed one. I never saw her without a cardi, summer included, though of course cardis were needed in summer back then.

Not really a fashion item ,
my lovely Gran after a perm would wear hairnet.
Brownish during the day , pink or blue to bed!
And always a half apron in the morning.

My Grandpa wore his bunnet on leaving the house .

My mum wore a housecoat over underware.
Then get dressed at midday after all housework was done or nails painted.

My father wore a clean nylon non iron (not true) shirt in every pastel colour you can think of and always a tie.

Corsets. My grandmother used to take hers off and scratch. I felt the same about my liberty bodice,

Pillbox hats with a veil.

Mum had two: black for funerals, obviously, and white for more frivolous occasions.

Mum often wore a scarf turban style. I think it must have been the fashion.

Hair curlers and headscarves.

I always remember the scent of Max Factor make up that my mother always wore.

When my mum came in from outside in the winter, she would take her coat off but leave her hat on. It used to drive me mad. I look at myself now and realise I come in and leave my hat on. Not stylus ones like hers but woolly ones, even if it’s not cold indoors

I had an aunt who always kept her hat, and a small silk scarf on even when sitting at the table eating. She also sat in the middle of a two seater sofa, long after she died of anyone sitting in the middle they were Doing an Auntie Lily.

My dad always wore a Trilby when I was growing up, and braces. He also wore those armband things (to keep his sleeves up) and a tie. He was always smart (years of being in the army , 1936 to 1945). Mum used to wear a nylon overall over her clothes during the day, in order to keep her clothes underneath clean.

Headscarves, my Mum often wore one. Matching pen and pencil set in his top pocket Dad.

My dad’s chunky cardies with leather look buttons. And yes Lilypops I thought my grandma put the hat pin through her head! My mum always had an apron round her waist - mostly homemade. I can remember the smell of it now - sort of fresh and clean but with smells of the kitchen.

Chanel style suits. ‘Take you anywhere’ - apparently.

My mum admired Mrs Thatcher's style so we had ?silk blouses with "pussy bows', suits or tailored dresses, 3" high heels and bouffant blonde hair. She had similar features too and, although only 5ft I/2 inch in height....was actually mistaken for Mrs Thatcher at Aberdeen airport once! I've taken after my gran in that I wear hats all the time though mine tend to be velvet or big straw ones and grandma's were felt or small straw ones for weddings. We used to joke that grandma slept in her hats.....

Mantilla, we were Catholic and most of the ladies wore one to Church if they didn't wear a hat.

My mother’s 3 inch stiletto shoes . How she walked on them beats me.

Dresses unfortunately.

I didnt wear dresses for about 20 years because of it.

I have now succumbed. But wince when I see a group of older ladies nowadays, all wearing dresses.

My mam was very proud of her grey suit. It had two skirts. One pencil, the other pleated. For years she wore her hair in a ‘victory roll’ .

My Gran always wore a dead fox around her suit. At least it looked like one to me as a 9 year old. She always wore a hat and i always thought that the way she jabbed that hat pin in her hat must surely stick in her head ,

Men all used to wear hats too. Trilbies, flat caps, bowlers….

Hats remind me of My Mum, Grandma and aunts. All ladies seemed to wear hats in the 1950's.

Not really a fashion item, but my Dad would make the most lovely tall walking sticks. In his later years with his long white beard little children thought he was Gandelf
