But if the site is down we won't be able to see the code to tell us not to panic at the site being down.

Like Paddy's auld mither writing to him to say let me know right away if you don't get this letter so that I can write again.

Ah, good idea. In future we'll tweet or pop it on FB so you know we haven't just given up and shut up shop. if it is down, best thing to do is drop us a quick email on contactus.
