I have just bought a laptop. My old computer was taking too long to wake up like a grumpy teenager. I had found the old one relatively easy to deal with but this new compu
ter is impossible. I have looked at putting windows 7 on but it isnt practicable.

Stick with it, once you get used to it Win8 is fine. You can set it up to work in a very similar way to Win7. I will remind myself how you change the way it works and post it here asap.

OK, read this page, it explains how to set your PC to start in desktop mode.

Please be aware there is a scam email in circulation relating to BT Mail users. It says that you will be upgrading to the new BTmail on 16th Oct, and you should accept the new conditions byclicking on a link.

DONT, it is a scam.

I noticed an advertisement in my U3A magazine for a book on Windows 8 published by The Helpful Book Company, their telephone number is 01229 777606 and they have a web site.

I did buy the idiots guide to w8 including the cd. I watched the cd and worked through it, never have read the book ! By the time I had worked through the CD, I was comfortable with w8. Occasionally I have a "how do I" moment, I just Google it.

If you're feeling confident you can find 'Classic Shell' on the internet and download it. It will help you revert to Windows 7 etc. whilst still keeping Windows 8 on your computer. I found it through the Computer Active magazine and it works for me

Windows 8.1 (a fee upgrade) brings back the start menu etc that was in win7, so if you upgrade to w8.1 you may not need "Classic shell", if however you want the total look and feel of the old Win7, Classic shell is the way to go.
But IMO, if you go to W8.1 and set it to start in desktop mode, you will very soon get used to the new format.
