Do you tweet?

I'm on it for my business and have 2.5K followers and it's useful. I also have a twitter name for my springer spaniel and it's amazing how many mad, doggie mad people there are out there!

I have had an account for a while now but dont often tweet.
I think one of the first tweets i did was when were trying to find Greatnan and I jumped in with both feet.
I like the short, sharp and punchy feel of Twitter.

Twitter illiterate, can only just about 'do' Facebook

I have never tried twitter or FB. I spend enough time on GN, I only have to look around this room to be told frequently- it is so untidy!

I love the shortness of it- you don't have to wade through reams of script.
It also forces you to think about what you write. Sometimes I need about 4 goes.

I love it. I suppose it is much more focused than Facebook. Our local police use it to report everything from prison absconders to problems on the M4, and I use it for hobbies and general observations on life. My Twitter name? Just look at my user name here and put "99" (without the quotes, of course) on the end of it.

I set up a Twitter account for work and now that I am (supposedly) retired, I still run the Twitter account - and get paid for it! That's because I set it up from scratch and every time I'd report on how many followers we have, they would say "No, that's how many followers you have" (2500). And no, I'm not telling what it is!

Or as my 97 year old Mum says "chitter"

I joined Twitter a couple of years ago and got in such a muddle with it.
In theory it appeals to me, but I'm hopeless with it. So I don't tweet.

I tried to use twitter. And havent actually deleted my account, unlike my FB account.
But I couldnt stand only using 140 characters[I would probably struggle with 140 words!], so ended up using about 5 lots of 140 characters each time!

My main trouble is I dont have a lot of interests. Never have had, and cant see it changing anytime soon. So not that much I wanted to follow.

Never say never with twitter though. I may return one day.

I love Twitter.
However it took me ages to understand it. I was there 4 and a half years with 10 followers and thought it was totally boring, was hardly ever on,- and then suddenly I got it and took off with it.
I ditched all ( or nearly all) the famous people and follow my interests.
There are lovely people on there and I never see the negative side.
I follow interests of education, walking,history, natural history and books.

Like all social media, Twitter is what one makes it. I've actually made a few new friends because of Twitter.

Facebook is fine - Adblock takes care o-f the advertiser's puffs, and the daft quizzes can be ignored - sometimes one will serve to make you feel good about yourself! But Twitter? It's all so disconnected and fractured - I never know where to find the beginning of a thread, and if I do find the start, where does it go from there? Also there is the fact that people often tweet things already on their blogs and/or their FaceBook accounts, which I will already have read. Very messy, and I can't be bothered with it. Yes, it's succinct - to the point where it borders on the mystical.

vampirequeen it is difficult and even though I do tweet I am still not quite sure how it all works and yet somehow I manage it. Give it another go, its all trial and error and it is very interesting.

I am getting slightly obsessed with tweeting about the wonderfulness of where I live... and have met some nice people as a consequence.
Twitter for beginners:
Get an account
Use the search box to find someone or something you are interested in e.g. a famous person and click the follow button. (you can always un-follow at any time if they tweet about their daily bowel movements or something )
To find someone put in their name.
To find a topic put in #crochet or #royalbaby or #Astonvilla
So you can follow the person OR you can use the #to search for tweets on a subject that interests you. You can then "favourite" them or share them with your followers by using the arrows etc underneath. Or reply.
You don't have to tweet at all if you don't want to. But the more you engage the more interesting it can get.
FB is getting so clogged up with adverts, and those daft questionniares... what kind of vegetable are you etc etc Surely they are just ways of gathering yet more data about you that can be used to do targeted advertising?

I follow artists, botanists, a variety of political writers, and others. I use Twitter in conjunction with "Pocket" so if I see a link to an article that might be interesting I can send it to Pocket to read offline some other time. I tweet about the wild plant and fungus species in my garden (246 and counting). I retweet stuff others tweet when I want to as it were spread their word, and I fave all sorts of things.

I followed a quite well known Yorkshire poet. He tweeted that in his utopian world, he would have trains running every ten minutes from Manchester to Sheffield. I tweeted something to the effect, it wouldn't be so go for trackside residents. He tweeted back that "trackside" would give them a clue. I was . I think he meant people shouldn't live there. Not very nice.

I don't follow him anymore. Half of what he tweeted was rubbish anyway.

That just leaves Cari and a couple of gay married vicars who put up very sweet pictures of their little dogs.

I follow some people eg Nick Robinson and Tim Harford and get interesting links sometimes as a result.
But I don't tweet myself.

I took a peek once but never went back I wastespend too much time on the web as it is.

I've learnt to to Tweet as local editor for GNDevon, I agree withJessM it takes a little time to master @# & the site that shortens links, but after that it's mildly addictive. I prefer it over FB I must admit

Yes, Twitter is a source of lots of interesting information. I mainly retweet when I see something that deserves sharing.
