Switching off wireless routers and telepones

Never turn ours off either there are often messages left on the answer phone while we are away which would be missed . At the moment our daughter is here but she's out at work a lot, I can't see the point in turning it off.

I've seriously never even thought about turning my landline and router off when away.
I must be bloody reckless.

It doesn't apply anyway as DS is here all the time.

The BT engineer who installed the upgrade said it was perfectly OK to turn the router off. Please can anyone tell me why these devices are designed to be perpetually on standby?

We always turn the router and house phone off if we are away for more than 24 hours. The risk of fire from the chargers is minimal, but why take any risk at all if you don't need to? The router starts up quite quickly when we turn it back on. It's quite possible that the phone loses it's stored numbers, I've never looked - we don't use our house phone much anyway so that isn't a problem.

And I ALWAYS turn the TV off when it's not in use. Flatscreens left on standby are a statistically significant cause of house fires as well as a waste of electricity.

We have a timer on our router to stop late night internetting. It is switched off completely when we go away.
Nfk I think the internet connection to your Sky TV is separate to your Internet wifi.

Our BT router is turned off regularly. No problems re-starting. Leave the main phone on to pick up the messages as can then pick up remotely. The additional phones seem happy to be turned off and re-charge without problem. I get obsessive about turning things off when we go away. Drive the family bonkers checking.

The Chemdry man was telling me they've had a spate of fires caused by LCD TVs being left on in standbye mode overnight.

We don't turn either off when we go away but I like to live dangerously and use the washer and dishwasher overnight too.

Come to think of it, one of our phones was left on a shelf out of DGS's reach, and the battery was dead after a couple of days, so I suppose you'd miss any messages if they record to the phone?

I used to switch off our router when we went away but I don't now as we have Sky and I understand it somehow uses Wi-fi, although I haven't a clue how and I don't want to upset it.

It hadn't occurred to me to disconnect the phones.

I don't think it would hurt your telephones to be left plugged in while you're on holiday.

If she did start plugging it back in, we'd remove the connection cord and hide it.

We unplug our router at night, as a way of preventing Minibags staying up too late doing stuff on her iPad. She's too lazy to come down and plug it in again. I plug it in in the morning when I get up. It takes a few minutes to start up and then it's fine.

I think it would be fine to turn off your router. If you unplug your telephones the rechargeable batteries in the handsets might run down and you would lose any stored numbers and settings.
