iPad or a different brand?

My ancient iPad is coming to the end of its life, being very slow, creaky and unresponsive. I've been looking at the Sony tablets which are slim, lightweight and look good. Has anyone made the switch from iPad to Sony, or any other brand?
Most of them are cheaper than iPads, but do they perform as well? I don't want to make a mistake. Advice appreciated please.

In town today passing the Sony shop I had a quick look and now I fancy the Xperia which was lovely and slim and lightweight but it cost the same as the iPad..
Maybe I could look up a review in Which magazine, if the library still has such a thing.

My iPad freezes and sometimes I have to poke it several times before it does anything. And I get that dreaded black screen with the white Apple logo which I think means it's updating itself. Slowly conking out, methinks.... (Like me)

It is, notanan. I love my Fire. So compact and easy to use. In fact I much prefer it to my daughter's iPad. And the price is incredible.

Amazon's customer service is fantastic! and the warrantee on the Fire is very good.

I have an extremely old Ipad. When the time came to replace it, I bought a Google Nexus which has been excellent. I think it's probably similar to the Amazon Fire. IIt's easy to use, can do everything the Ipad did at a fraction of the price.

I use an iPad and my mum has a Samsung. I much prefer the iPad, it's more intuitive. I find the Samsung rather 'clunky'.

We all have iPhones (apart from Dh) and the iPad means we can all be linked up if we wish.

Samsung Galaxy tab for me. Does all that I need without being tied in to Apple and it's a whole lot cheaper

I had my IPad for many years and loved it but it became too old to update and died.
My OH bought me a Samsung Galaxy for Christmas. Very easy to use. I'm very happy with it and a fair bit cheaper than a new I Pad.

I also have an iPad Pro in Rose Gold,I love it,the size is just perfect, larger than the iPad mini I upgraded from but not as big as the iPad which I find just too big to hold comfortably.

I too have a creaky iPad and am thinking of replacing it with an iPad Air purely because of the longevity of the one I have. Then I saw the ones with detachable keyboards and am thoroughly confused!

LadyGracie, do you find the iPad can do anything that the Galaxy cannot do, and vice versa? Do you have any preference for one or the other?

I've not long had a iPad mini (a gift) which is great but I also have a Samsung Galaxy 10 which i also really like, that I've had for quite a few years.

I have just purchased an Amazon fire for about £40 and I love it.
The camera is front and rear facing
it has 16 GB and I think you can put up to 128 GB of expandable storage

I have found plenty of free Apps and add ons, also free virus protection software

I don't play games although is a wide selection but I do download books and music or just listen music through pad via a speaker.
There is also a large selections of movies inc Amazon video and netflix
Free unlimited cloud storage

Documents can be printed off (not sure how as I have not needed to do so far). Plus view and edit Office documents

Amazon also provde a help sevice

I have a 7inch fits. That nicely into my handbag, but there are larger versions.

I would be interested to know what the advantages are regarding the Ipads and other expensive pads

As I'm new to the Amazon Fire pad I have no way knowing how long it will last

I'm thinking of getting a IPad Air too. I'm used to Apple and have an iPhone as well, synced with the tablet, essential for the calendar. I'd rather stick with what I know at my age. I was thinking I would use the old one for games etc.

Probably depends on how much you use up to date technology. I am very happy with Samsung Galaxy but I am something of a technophobe. I am not a gamer apart from word games. My level of expertise does not warrant paying iPad prices.

Samsung Galaxy has 10" screen as well. One of my essentials when I was looking at tablets. I think at the time it came top of the recommended lists that I looked at if you didn't want an ipad. As I said, I've been very satisfied with it.

Not sure of the cost, as it was a present, but I think around £600. It depends what you want it to do, there are cheaper I pads. But I do like the 9.7 dimension.

Gaaaaaaaahh! ? That's a step too far Greyduster grin

Greyduster Mon 20-Mar-17 09:25:31

The one my step grandson has cost a little under a thousand pounds ?, but he needed all the bells and whistles for his university course.

Lona Mon 20-Mar-17 09:19:48

I've got a Samsung Galaxy too, it's great!

rosesarered Mon 20-Mar-17 09:19:25

The new iPad Air ( with loads of storage, if you are an avid gamer!) costs a shred under £500, what does the Pro cost?

Greyduster Mon 20-Mar-17 09:16:20

I will watch this thread with interest as my current iPad is beginning to creak at the seams and do odd things recently. I would love an iPad Pro, J52. I'd have to be super nice to DH to get him to dig that deep into his pocket though!

Have an iPad Pro.....great machine....light and bright...replaced an iPad mini I had for 6 years....need iPad to use FaceTime.....love it

rosesarered Mon 20-Mar-17 09:09:04

Bought my iPad Air and love it! can't compare it to other brands, but we usually buy Apple products.

Teetime Mon 20-Mar-17 09:04:05

I have a Samsung Galaxay - about half the price of an I-Pad and does all the same things.

Badenkate Mon 20-Mar-17 09:03:51

I've had a Samsung for 3 years. Never had any problems.
