Mini DV tape to computer advice

I would like to copy from these small tapes to my computer BUT
my old Sony Handycam DCR-HC24 will not allow me to load my tape. The carriage is not taking in the tape.

I've not used the recorder for a long time and this may be the problem.

Is it possible to do this without going thru the recorder does anyone know?

I've had a chat with our local Photography shops and they either cannot offer any advice,
say they can do them for £8 a tape ( I have dozen so not an option)
send it back to Sony and if they still have the parts will charge a minimum of £100
or the last option to try and buy a used one hoping it doesnn't have the same problem.
Apparently it is a common problem but I have been lucky over the years and have never had this problem.
