Yesterday morning I inadvertently changed my year of birth to 2021. Instantly a message came up telling me I was too young to be on FB and my account was immediately closed. Another message came up telling me I could apply to be reinstated by sending a photo of my driving licence, which I did, and adding it would take just over a day for my id to be checked. Unfortunately my id has my real first name (which I rarely use) on it and my FB account doesn't, so I'm wondering if they will even accept the id. When I try to go on Messenger FB stops me but asks if I want to open another account. I haven't tried that yet and don't know if I should. I don't want to end up with two FB accounts, I would just like my old one back! Does anyone have any ideas, please?

Facebook does have a rule that you must use your real name. Not that a lot do but it might be a problem if you want to have it reinstated. I guess you can give it a go? Otherwise you'll need to start over.

I don’t use my real name on FB.
If I’m honest, FB scares the pants off me. I don’t understand how they know so much?
I added no friends, but got a friend suggestion who was the sister of my boyfriend from when I was 16, who I haven’t seen or spoken to for 30 years and who lives 50 miles away. Just how?

You are desperate to get back onto Facebook? ?

Rosalyn69 Fri 13-Aug-21 12:16:50

Indeed why?

Although I never asked for it I suddenly had two FB accounts. Recently one disappeared which was good in one way, but now I do not get all my notifications, contacts, messages, etc.

How many of us are on FB. I am not. Nor on any other . Just gransnet.

I am it keeps me up with family and friends who I don’t have on Watsapp. As long as you have your settings correct there is no problem with FB.

I thought that pretty much everyone over 30 was on FB.
Especially popular with the 50 pluses.
All of my female acquaintances and most of the male ones are on it.

I’m not fanny, never been tempted at all. Just a dinosaur I guess.

FannyCornforth Fri 13-Aug-21 14:04:51

CGI’m not on it ‘properly’, I just joined (with a fake name!) because there were art group and stuff that I wanted to look at.
I hate the idea of sharing photos and telling everyone what you are up to constantly.
And the last thing I need is old school mates popping up out of nowhere!
People did seem to get addicted to it a while back, but I think that a lot of people have gone of it.

I’ve been on it for years, keeps me in touch with friends abroad, I use messenger a lot. WhatsApp for family, which I use for calls too.

I don’t use my real name on FB-too many parents out there. I did originally call myself
Anya Viewnome but my DD said it was daft so now I use something that sounds normal.
Some family use it, some use WhatsApp. My youngest DGD is desperate to be on FB. Evidently all her friends are, even though they’re too young

I have a wry smile when I read that people stay off Facebook because they are worried about security.

Try googling "gransnet my facebook account has been closed". Or try googling "Gransnet" followed by your name. Or ponder how advertisers on GN might know that you could be interested in HGV driver training or buying horses. shock

I'm on Facebook and the last time I posted was the middle of July. My security settings are at their highest and I don't get random anonymous posters on FB telling me what an idiot I am for voting remain or that my taste in weddings is disgusting.

I put a different DOB on but there is no fooling FB, it's quite scary as all social media sites are.

When I was wished Happy Birthday by several posters on FB I found they changed my birth date to my real one.

Your friend suggestion could be because he is a friend of one of your FB friends. I get all kinds of suggestions, most I've never heard of so I just ignore all of them.

I use FB every day and never felt afraid of it any more than using GN I ve been on it about 12 years
I m not sure what will happen nottooold if your information doesn’t line up with what they have you may look like two different people
I ve always given my mobile phone number (not to be displayed) as a back up to them knowing it’s me
You do often get weird friend requests etc but just delete them
I ll be interested to see how you get on
Good luck

I can't stand FB, and have deleted my Whatsapp account, I don't want anything to do with Mark Zuckerberg or Nicholas Clegg. The family use Signal, which is open source and more secure. I am careful what I post here, trying not to reveal anything particularly identifiable.

Sallywally1 Fri 13-Aug-21 16:05:28

I have suspended my account after I was informed that someone had managed to get into it and I should change my password. This worried me a bit, so I decided to give it a rest. I don’t miss it at all, it used to be quite good, but I think it has had its day. I wont delete it though as that means losing all my past posts and photographs.

I was booted off FB during May for 'suspicious activity' - I knew I hadn't done or said anything bad, so assumed I had been hacked. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get back on - my account had been well and truly locked. In the end, I had to create another email account and start from scratch using the new email address.

The funny thing was, I thought I hated Facebook, and only kept on it to keep in touch with family members; but I really, really missed it. I missed my cat groups, my nature groups and history groups, as well as friends and family. So relieved to get back on it (at the same time wishing I wasn't bothered!)

NotTooOld Fri 13-Aug-21 16:38:05

TwoWolves - I know how you feel. I have a sort of love/hate relationship with FB. I rarely post anything myself but it is good to see what others are up to (so long as they don't post pics of their breakfasts). I find the local FB page very useful for local information and any queries are always answered quickly by someone in the area.

It's reassuring, though, that they won't allow babies to open FB accounts

?

BlueBelle Fri 13-Aug-21 17:43:33

It’s a choice, some hate it, some love it that’s all fine
I would miss it a lot, my gardening group, my history group, my local group, as well as family and friends I was hacked twice, ( my fault for opening something I didn’t check) but it was sorted very quickly with a new password

This is a ‘revived’ post from 2021. I think they are using it to advertise someone’s services so I am reporting it.
