Can anyone help me with what I'm sure is a very basic MS Word question, please?
I am editing a long document, and want to insert page numbers in the header. Or not in the header if it makes life easier - I don't care where they go at this stage?. Anyway, what I want is the title page, the contents page and the next page to have no numbers (although all will have text), and for the rest of the document to be numbered sequentially, starting with page 1 on the fourth page of the document. How do I do it?
I have clicked on 'page number' in the header menu, and the only options I can see (apart from where to position the numbers) are to have them start on the first page or the second. If I opt for no number on page 1, it starts numbering on page 2, which is not what I want. It even numbers it page 2, maddeningly.
I googled, but all I can find are instructions for numbering systems within a document (eg for report headings) which is not what I want to do either.
I have tried numbering the pages then adding in the first 3 afterwards, but it just defaults to numbering them all ?. The document is going to be made into a .pdf and sent electronically, so I can't print it as two separate documents and bind them together and get around it like that.
I am using Word for mac, if that makes a difference (it usually doesn't).
Thanks in advance if you can help - It is so frustrating when Word won't co-operate!
