My daughter can’t get her wi fi sorted out with BT

She recently moved to Suffolk. BT came to fit her with wi fi etc. said they needed a specialist team as they couldn’t fit it as it could interfere with a post office sorting office next door. She is desperate as she needs it to work. She has rung several times and was told someone had come but she wasn’t in!!!! She was in and there was no notification of any visit. I suggested she tried EE but she thinks they will have the same problem and it appears EE are connected with BT. Virgin do not cover her area. Would be grateful if anyone has any other suggestions.

I know nothing at all but maybe she could contact OpenReach?

Sorry if that's a daft suggestion.

Does she have hotspot in her phone to connect while it gets installed?

Here in the US, they give you a date and time for the appointments- I hope it is the same case there

Does she have a friendly neighbour that she could piggyback on.
We did this for our neighbour last year when Sky let her down.

For when we are away from home we bought a 4G LTE Pocket Wifi gadget (Muama Ryoko) for which we buy pay-as-you-go time (with EE, but other companies will do sim cards for it and there are other makes of gadget). We find it works well for what we need.

I don't know whether something like that would be powerful enough for you daughter, but it might tide her over until she can pin BT down to getting the job done.

BT, EE and OpenReach are all parts of the same company, and there have been strikes, which may have impacted on your daughter's service. I think that's fair enough, but it is not fair enough to say there has been a call when there hasn't - that drives me mad.

She could ring BT and ask for the call to be escalated to a supervisor, and then ask for it to be logged as urgent.

Openreach has no customer service number - you have to go through BT. BT messed up my broadband before I moved house, couldn't fix it, lots of timewasting phone calls and unfulfilled promises so I ditched them and went with Plusnet which although owned by BT is far more efficient and customer service is a real person.

Thank you all for the info. Will give her your posts. Plusnet is one to explore. Doodledog. that is an idea she can use. She moved a few weeks ago so although some neighbours are friendly it might be awkward to ask for wi fi sharing. The sorting office next door is the problem - so says BT. It’s a specialist team that needs to attend ( think it involves drilling etc). Thank you again.

Just an update. Engineers arrived this morning. Daughter went outside to tell them she was desperate as she needed it for work. They talked together and then disappeared. No explanation. So no further. Can't get through to them. No Virgin. No other option. I don't know what she can do.

When my wifi isn't working, I use the hotspot from my phone. I work online and am able to teach on video as well as using other online sources using it.

It isn't perfect, but works ok for me, and has done when I've been travelling too.

Thank you Gagajo.

We are in rural Suffolk and BT is the only option. The 4G coverage is non existent for any provider and so our phones have to connect to the WiFi hub. I am sorry I can’t offer any help. Keep plugging away! Try contacting the Guardian/Observer who can sometimes get things done?

Lovetopaint037 Fri 16-Dec-22 19:45:58

Thank you Nannytopsy. That explains more. Todays she had yet another appointment, one was Wednesday but no show. So given another today but again no show just a text this evening saying it had been cancelled. Another long wait and someone saying it was unacceptable but nothing more. She is beside herself. She lives in Bungay. No wi fi, no work. Her money is running out and after battling I’ll health this is the last thing she needs. I am so worried about her and BT or Outreach just don’t care. They have a monopoly so why would they?

Get her, when she has wifi, or you, to make a statement on Facebook and Twitter, public domain, it’s worked for some with other companies

A really kind person messaged me with advice on contacting the CO and she had a very prompt reply. An engineer turned up promptly and told her that the job needed scaffolding and two engineers but these hadn’t been ordered weeks ago. It is still in the process of getting sorted and hopefully the promise of scaffolding will materialise and this nightmare will be resolved.

Seems like an awful lot of running around just to have WiFi !
Personally I find BT a bit of a nightmare as they don’t have any customer service , think they are a bit too big for their boots .
I have finally settled with Now Broadband ( NowTV also have telephone and broadband ) , after having Talk Talk. ( terrible customer service ) , Sky ( rather expensive ) EE. ( kept putting their prices up ) I’m more than happy with them , are a fair price also they also have fairly good customer service .

I'm happy with BT but I tend to deal direct with the complaints dept as it cuts out a lot of the stress of going through their usual channels!
Seriously, once a complaint is logged you would be phoned by a human who can be very helpful. Good luck.

BlueBelle Fri 30-Dec-22 10:24:39

EE prices went down for me dibbydod when they very fairly explained I was on a tariff I wasn’t using enough of I ve always had good service from EE

Bungay is a small market town in rural Suffolk and it won’t be easy My friend lives in another village not far from there and there is no coverage at all she has never been able to get it so doesn’t use a phone or any other tech I have to ring her on her landline for any contact

Lovetopaint037 Sat 07-Jan-23 13:54:39

Well today my daughter got it. Thank you so much cornergran who messaged me. At long last they appeared as prompted by the CO’s team.. She is beyond happy. Thank you soo much.

Update. Apparently they sent her £250 compensation.

We had trouble with Openreach fitting our new wi fi. But BT did supply us with a mini hub at no cost, Might be worthwhile asking for one.
