They are called tabs.

There are various things you can do to close tabs or to prevent them opening in the first place.

If they are open, go top right to the two little overlapping squares. Click and hold. Select close all.

If you want to prevent them appearing on start up, take either of these steps:

Press and hold the Shift key while opening Safari or

Use the system setting “Close windows when quitting an app”.

After you configure the system setting, check Safari settings as well:

From the menu bar in Safari, choose Safari >Settings (orPreferences).

In the General pane, choose a setting from the “Safari opens with” menu.

If you set Safari to open with a new window, use the “New windows open with” menu to define which window or tabs Safari should reopen.

Yes, NotAGran, thanks for that, I can 'flick' them off.
I was X ing them off individually.
As I had never had them before the update, they annoyed me.
Small worries hey. Why are updates sometimes a pain?

It seems to me that they are the previous websites you have opened and the windows are still open.
You need to X out of them, starting at the righthand one.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't think they are what I am referring to.
Will try and get a screen shot and attach it, so that perhaps what I am trying to say will be clearer.
They are right at the top, where they say
"Good morni9ng Thursday, Waitrose competion, Maru/ edr, etc"
Before the update, these were never there. Or am I imagining the whole thing?

If you touch the three little dots too right then choose history from that menu you can clear your history. Does that help? I don’t have history showing at the top but my iPad is getting old so might be different software.

They ve always been there on my iPad don’t bother me I don’t really see them and I clear them every few days
If you lift you page up a fraction they will disappear off the screen

I'm not sure what to call these things, but, Since my recent iPad update, there have been lines at the top of the page, when looking at Gransnet, showing where I have searched.
Please, is there a techy person who could tell me how to get rid if them? They are very annoying.
I can click on them, and there is a way to get them to disappear, but then they come back.
