My iPad is running well on the above but it is no longer offering the updates to 17. It is an iPad Pro 9x7 and I have had it a few years now. As I use a banking app and Amazon etc etc I am concerned that the security will have been reduced so wondering if I should be replacing it. Has anyone thoughts on this as to whether it is too soon. Hearing about iOS 18 coming along.

I have always updated iPad and iPhone as soon as they no longer support updates (sometimes sooner).

The last thing I need is not to be able to get onto my banks/insurance accounts.

I would invest in a new one ASAP, especially when using it for online banking etc. BUT be careful, read my new comments I have just posted on the forum called BUYERS BEWARE.

Don’t confuse End of Life (EOL) and End of Support (EOS). One is for hardware support, the other is for software support.

There is also a difference between Active Support (updating the iOS) and Security Support (providing ongoing security support for older iOS).

See:

endoflife.date/ipad

endoflife.date/ipados

You can see that for iOS 16.7.8, active software support ended on 18 September 2024 (you can’t upgrade to iOS 17) but security support is ongoing - latest update 13 May 2024.

The first generation iPad Pro does not have support for iOS 17 but second generation onwards do.

The iPad Pro was first sold in November 2015 with a screen size of 12.9 inches. A smaller 9.7 inch model was released in March 2016. Is that the one you have? If so you can see from the tables that you still have support for hardware and security.

All this upgrading makes me heartily sick !! I only have a state pension plus a few investments to survive on. I have just been notified that I will be unable to continue using the NatWest app on my ipad after the middle of August. How accessible is that? I certainly am not going to cough up for a new one. No wonder some oldies feel abandoned in this tech. world.

Agree gangy5. This is worrying.
