WhatsApp won't play with me, help needed!

I don't have a smart phone, just an old pay-as-you-go mobile, mainly for emergencies.
I do have a tablet, which I am using now.
I've tried and tried to install Whats app, but halfway through the process it instructs me to point my phone at a barcode-type thing - and I'm stumped!
I can't afford a smart phone and I couldn't afford the monthly payments either, so what do I do? My friends increasingly don't use Facebook any more and I'm feeling left out. The only advice I get is "ask one of the grandchildren". They just seem puzzled that my phone isn't 'smart' and every time they try to scan this code with my phone they use up all my credit.
I'm 86 but quite confident with IT, but still cannot load Whatsapp!
Help!

Don’t understand technology at all so no help really but just to say my contract with Tesco is only 7.99 a month for more data than I can use.

It might not be as expensive as you think.🙂

“Enquire” amongst any family members if they have a cast-off smart phone kicking around that thou could have- and get them to set it up and help you get familiar with it.

WhatsApp on my iPad (not sure about other tablets) doesn’t always stay unlike on iPhones or others.
I often have to do the scan thing to bring it back.

Agree about the Facebook thing, hardly anyone posts much nowdays. But it’s useful for very local info and chats and interest groups I find.

I found this tutorial and wonder if it would work. It's for older android phones. Hope it's helpful.

Apparently Whatsapp cannot be used o a tablet, you need a device with a sim card.

I can get WhatsApp on my “fairly old” iPad Pro But have it on an iPhone as well which I have to use to occasionally scan back into it on WhatsApp web.

Your tablet isn’t a mobile phone, so won’t accept the WhatsApp App. For that you need a smart phone with a camera.

You need a SIM card because Whatsapp is connected to your mobile phone number.

I buy reconditioned iPhones which last for years and I pay £10 a month for far far more data than I ever need Exdancer I m sure it’s not as bad as you think
When buying reconditioned just make sure it’s got good battery life

Go into ChatGPT and state your problem. It will take you through the solution step by step.

Lebara charges about £4.99 a month for loads more data than I ever use.

My elderly I phone was GD’s cast off, I’ve had it 5 years, had a new battery installed after a year.

I hope it keeps going, as I like it and am used to it.

I hope so. It was a year ago. 🤷‍♀️
