What is Twitter (now X)?

I'm an ignoramus about IT. Its a bit like a car - I drive it, I can make the lights and windscreen wipers work, I can even fill up the water tank and put petrol in the right hole. But I couldn't fit a dash-cam or anything like that.
I have a little Samsung tablet which I use for communicating with all you lovely ladies on here, plus using emails and google etc.
Can anyone explain why I might want to put this 'X twitter' thing on it?
Is it useful?
If so - HOW do I install it?

Go to the App Store on your tablet, download the app X. have a look, if you dont like it you can delete it.

I installed it a few years ago but have never used it. I couldn't figure out what the point of it was. I wouldn't bother if I were you.

Unless you like right wing head bangers and Elon Musk in your time line all the time it's best avoided.

I loved it before Musk bought it because people posted links to all sorts of interesting topics and articles which I would never have stumbled on on my own. It was also quite good for discussions. But people have left in disgust at Musk and the hate speech, misinformation and conspiracy theories he allows to be spread (and posts himself) .

There are a couple of alternatives, bluesky and mastadon, but they're nowhere near as extensive as twitter/X. But they're more polite...

MaizieD I scroll through following as it’s full of friends and things I am interested in.

Occasionally I have a look at for you it as you say, rather overflowing with Elon Musk and his supporters.

I can second this comment. If you want direct access to a variety of scientists BlueSky is your go to IMHO.

I enjoy it, but easy to delete ExDancer if you find it's not for you

Twitter is good if you can cope with a range of views. I enjoy it as I think it gives a broader perspective than the usual middle class views.

I enjoy it too, but then I'm on a variety of similar sites. BlueSky is good, but not as many people on it as on Twitter (X). You do need a healthy dose of scepticism, as you do with all social media though.

Twitter is a scary place now, but Bluesky is very good.
