Got my hearing aids but still cannot understand some people and am completely at a loss with the one-liners and quips that enliven films and TV shows. Lots of eminent reports about this problem make me conclude IT'S (somewhat) NOT ME, IT'S (mostly) THEM! People are speaking faster now and my ageing brain cannot keep up.
*A Professor in Kansas measured rate of speech "a decade ago" at about 145 words per minute, now average rate is 160 to 180. That was in 2011, it must be faster now and some people describe the result as: "they sound like chipmunks", "rapid-fire questions", "torrents of information".
A bit of nostalgia for my contemporaries: "We Shall Fight on the Beaches" (Winston Churchill) 128 wpm - almost within my shorthand speed!
