Virgin Media are driving me crazy and I am losing my emails

Not just Virgin. Microsoft aren't helping. Everything worked when I checked my ntlworld.com emails yesterday morning using Classic Outlook on my Windows 11 laptop.

Yesterday evening, Outlook refused to open. I did the usual thing, restart laptop and try again, which has fixed the problem in the past. No joy. I tried the "repair" instruction. Nothing happened. I decided to re download and re-install the program. I looked up the "download Classic" and downloaded it. I got New Outlook. I hate the layout, but could see my inbox. unfortunately it doesn't import the Contacts, or the "Things to keep" folder where I keep vital stuff or the "Genealogy" folder for family history contacts. So, I decided to re-download missing emails from My Account/emails on Virgin Media.

Virgin Media have changed their login, it seems. I worked through the new system and got to "Enter 3rd party email account". I didn't have one. Why did I need one? I only have the one email account, so I rang for help. Why wasn't I informed my ntlworld.com account was being retired? I have stuck with VM mainly because of the problem of changing my email address with so many personal contacts and official organisations. And I have lost my contact list. My laptop is fairly new, so some contacts haven't messaged me since I got it - and I can't access my contacts list I moved from my previous PC.

With no other option, I opened a g-mail account but got stuck on the "give an alternative email address in case of problems". Obviously I can't use the ntlworld.com one! Luckily I could skip that.
Then the guy tells me that the next step will be to switch me immediately to the g-mail - and ALL MY NTLWORLD.COM MESSAGES ON THIER SERVER WILL BE DELETED!! They will be irrecoverable.

By this time Virgin had locked my account because it had been held on the log-in process for too long. I have to phone back today for one of their "advanced technicians" to guide me through the remaining steps as I "don't have a younger person to help me" (which I don't). My head is still spinning and I got 5 hours sleep last night with the stress.

Oh, and by the way, he told me I have to PAY for the switchover!

Ok, dowloaded nasty new Outlook with its obligatory junk advertising emails so I can see my messages. Rebuilt my address book, best as I can. Just spent 2 days going through, looking for all the organisations etc who email me and getting my email address changed. Got to go to my bank in person to do it there as I don't internet bank. Damned bank has closed in this town. Getting there but what a kerfuffle!

Virgin has been phasing out ntlworld emails for a while now, but the communication has been terrible. Best move is to migrate everything to Gmail or Outlook.com before they shut it down completely. Painful, but at least you get stability.
