Lithium Batteries - fire risk

Even when disconnected lithium batteries can ignite so none should go in the hold where a fire will not be discovered easily. Those that ignited in the bin lorry weren't connected to a device.

Ideally the airlines like you to remove wheelchair and scooter batteries and keep them in the cabin, but it is such a struggle to get them out of DH's wheelchair once he is in the aisle chair, that his wheelchair goes in the hold with the batteries still in, but disconnected.

How do they go on on a plane saw mobility scooters lined up to go I the luggage hold down below.
Do they take the batteries out & put somewhere where they can access them in case of fire?

There was a bin lorry went on fire not far from us a couple of months ago, and that was put down to it being from a battery or batteries.

Oh dear, something else for the worry list!

Reports in the media about people throwing lithium batteries into general rubbish and fires starting in the bin lorry resulting in all the contents of the bin lorry being tipped onto the street for sorting - a very unpleasant job for the poor refuse collectors.
When i looked up fires caused by lithium on google, the list of possible causes of household fires was quite scary, mainly in respect of over charging of devices.
Anybody else with similar worries ?
