Anyone been to Egypt recently?

Hi everyone, my DH and I are off to Egypt mid-January, although I feel a bit uneasy about going. I went to Cairo about 10 years ago, and was escorted everywhere by armed soldiers. Our guide was frantic we didn't wander off. We saw some amazing sights of course, but it was an uncomfortable experience. However, DH missed out on that trip and is determined to go this time. And obviously I don't want him to be disappointed.

Given all the current unrest, we contacted our tour company. They are experienced and well-respected, and said they had absolutely no concerns at present. (And if we pull out we lose 75% of our money).

It would be great to hear from anyone who's been recently.

Many thanks.

We went in October/November but nowhere near Cairo. I think it depends where you are going. We were well away from all the main holiday places and there was no trouble and no obvious security. It was our second year at the same place and we plan to go back next year too.

My daughter's MIL is an Egyptologist and visits twice a year with friends as a tourist, as well as other visits. She came back three weeks ago, having had a great time, and said all was fine. No concerns at all.

It depends very much were in Egypt. I would avoid Cairo and Alessandria at the moment, but southern Sinai is perfectly safe, around Sharm-el-Sheik, etc (where GreatNan and I had a great snorkelling holiday in June).

I did hear of some protests in Sharm a few weeks ago but I don't think there was any trouble as such.

Where are you going GR

Thanks for your comments everyone, sounding fairly ok so far.

Hi Movedalot, we are mainly cruising on the Nile, but have a few days in Cairo and in Alexandria (oh dear, granjura....) The tour company is still saying it's all fine, they have tours running at the moment and everyone is enjoying themselves.

So fingers crossed, all will be well.

If you are with local guides, they will know what is what and keep you safe. They are in constant touch with locals and have their finger on the pulse. i just wouldn't go visiting independently, without speaking arabic and having all the local knowledge. Enjoy - you'll be fine with the guides smile

Have a great time, you should be OK on the boat and as already said, guides will be local and know what's what.

Let us know all about it afterwards.

Happy Christmas smile
