I've been checking out insurance for my husband and I went onto one of the comparison sites and I saw cancellation cover at £10,000 would that be enough.

I think that it was a company callled Stay Sure which was advertising on ITV last night. They cover pre existing conditions and one is covered up to the age of 85 years. Obviously the small print was not availabale but the cost appeared to be reasonable. It may be worth exploring on line to see if there are any catches.

My DH and I travel a lot and also take lengthy holidays. We have found that its often a compromise between affordable bwith good cover and total cover, so go for good cover whilst away versus total cover of holiday costs. That's the bit that makes insurance expensive. Most insurance cover only goes to £5000 maximum cover for cost of holiday but give great cover once away.
I am in the middle of claiming for the very first time following a detached retina whilst on a world cruise.

Do you have a Nationwide account? They are giving free travel insurance to their account-holders so do contact your local branch and ask about their policy as regards cancellation. The cover ceases once you reach 75.

Go thru an insurance broker.

I have just paid for a once in a life time holiday. On checking my annual travel insurance policy I have discovered the cancellation fee would not even cover HALF of what I have paid out for the holiday.
So I rang my insurance company to up the premium but was told "that is the maxium pay out on any of our policies".
Next, I contacted the company that sold me the holidayto buy new insurance and although their cancellation payout is a little more, they can see it does not cover the amount I have already given them.
This is not an age or health issue. Now adays lots of holidays cost many thousands of pounds but how many people are aware of this major flaw in insurance policies?
Can anyone recommend a travel insurance policy with realistic cancellation cover please? I have no reason to suspect I need it but you never know.
