We went to Savannah and Charleston last year I thought they were really lovely, we were staying in Hilton Head Island, Georgia and would definitely like to go back as we wished we had spent longer in both of these cities, I'd quite like to do a Civil War trail. Nonu, after we came back I rented the film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil as it was all shot in Savannah.

savannah might be kind of snotty, never been but my sister lived there for a little while.Very pretty. Don't like their accents! Sound snotty and stuck up. Oh I take no offense to the term Yanks. My father was one during the war!

Yes it's warm!! We always seem to have to short a spring when it comes to temp. It's 83 degrees now going to 84. I'm going to get DH to take a picture of my HUGE asalia? bush in the front yard to show you It's blooms.

SEl are you going to join the club or not ? Please speak to me I need to know ?

Can"t have a club of just one !!

Mind you I do know there are several G/N"s who have been Stateside .

At the risk of offending EA I thought Savannah, Georgia was very unfriendly (I could have used another term but restrained myself) Possibly the least friendly place I have been to in the US. I drove into it having driven through fields where black people were buried. Not cemeteries, just fields.

I meant by being the oposite of Nonu I was referring to her americanophile comment. I'm a anglophile..

Nonu Wed 17-Apr-13 18:18:19

Envious , I was hedging my bets , some Americans are insulted about being called Yankees .

I loved your post , I am at the moment reading a book about Savannah ,Georgia ,called Midnight in the garden of good and evil.

It was made into a film by Clint Eastwood , another place I have visited.

sunshine still alittle about .

Spect it is getting quite warm over there now .?

Enviousamerican Wed 17-Apr-13 18:17:22

No! Absolutely not!!! I just happen to see that on a Facebook page and thought it was sort of funny.

Sel Wed 17-Apr-13 18:15:32

Enviousamerican I know you addressed your reply to Nonu but I'm puzzled. Did she imply you were uneducated? confused

Enviousamerican Wed 17-Apr-13 18:14:34

Nonu,I did miss Cameron speaking.I thought it was well done. Not over the top and fitting for who she was.Wanted to see some back turns though! Or how about Jack Straw on a soap box!

Enviousamerican Wed 17-Apr-13 18:08:27

Nonu,I guess I'm the oposite of you than. Just saw this on Facebook.Sort of cute. Honey,I'm fixn' to tell you something' about being Southern.Being Southern doesn't mean I'm not educated.I may say y'all and call you sweetie or honey and I might " bless your heart and I might even piddle around. I 'll greet you with a "hey" and a hug. I might refer my grocery cart as a "buggy". I'm polite and say "Ma'am and Sir and of you hear a Southerner say" Oh HELL NO!" You'd better run! If you don't know where yonder is than you are from the South. Just for the record I don't say ain't. I was always told ain't isn't a word, but you still hear it being said. Maybe it's like having a Yorkshire accent!

Envious , been to all those places so hard to say which is best , although i was very humbled by Arlington, you are lucky you don"t have to fly 3,000 miles to see these sights .

Sel where have you been in U.S. ? could we maybe compare notes ?

maybe I am a Americanophile , new word I googled , think sounds nicer than Yankophile .

smile

Envious hopefully GN this give you a flavour of this little bees nest, the UK - I'm sorry your physical limitations have impacted on your plans. I've travelled quite a bit in the USA - when people here talk about 'Americans' I just wonder who they have in mind. The differences thoughtout the country are enormous and I think it is as divided ideologically as ours. I've always found Americans to be curious, friendly and always courteous. Some I've met have put my knowledge of British history to shame. I took a tiny plane in Nevada some years ago - the pilot spent his holidays walking Roman roads in England and expected to discuss them with me smile

I realise I did post a little early , forgot about the time difference !

You certainly have travelled a lot , good on you it is enjoyable isn"t it?

Dare I ask , did you enjoy the coverage of the funeral ?

hey Nonu, was up early and barely awake to see the church service for M.T. They didn't show anything else, except putting her in the hearse. Ive been all over TN. The mountains often throughout my life. You must visit during the fall to see the leaves.Been to KY.,Ala. Florida,Mississippi,Ga.Ark.Con.Maryland,Calif. Washington D.C. Plus Arlington Va.,N.C.,S.C., And N.Y.C. Never out west. maybe someday but for the last three years my back problems limit my sitting without pain. sad So my big dream of going back to visit your country is just that.

Hi envious I said i would look through his diaries to find when we were in Momument Valley, it was actually in 2002 and we visited Kayenta. The unpaved roads which take you to the best views have to be driven in a 4x4 or as a back packer. Our rental car was not allowed to be used. You would really love it there , hope you realise your dream.

Chattenooga has been visited twice and amongst the interesting things we saw at the train station was an original "Choo Choo" now used as a restaurant. We also took a Duck Boat ride [which i loved] and a steam train ride. In addition we drove up to the Point Military Park at the top of the mountain and saw the Civil War Museum with the famous 19ft x 30ft painting of the battle by the English artist James Walker [1874].
Then on to the Tennessee Aquarium which I we found fascinating with the escalator going right to the top and then walking all down the slopes to see the different levels of river life . [Have you been]?
Other places in Tennessee I have visited were Knoxville , about 100 miles from Lynchburg [give or take]. We also visited Pigeon Forge [but did not go into Dollywood] and the Great Smokey National Park .
Your National Parks are magnificent .

Hope you haven"t fallen asleep . Do you manage to travel round that big old country of yours much ? sunshine
