Visiting Melbourne / St Kilda's

Can anyone enlighten me please? DH and I are planning a trip down under at the end of this year. We will have three nights in Melbourne before going onto Tasmania. Should we think of staying in the city or would St Kilda's B & B be more enjoyable? haven't been to Melbourne since 1972!

I stayed in an Art Deco one near the station called the Savoy. I found it well run and on good bus routes as we hadn't yet picked up a car. This was a few years ago.
