My DSS and wife are in Perth for three years and would like us to visit. If DP stays in work and we can afford it we would like to go Easter 2015( we have to go in school hols) Which would be the best route? Manchester's the best airport for us. If we stopped overnight en route would the extra cost just be the cost of accommodation or would we need visas etc? We cannot stay with DSS because they have a small flat and there may be five of us. We were thinking of an apartment ,has anybody rented one in Perth? Sorry for all the questions but any help appreciatedsmile

I flew direct from London to Singapore, then onwards to Perth. The stop-over in Singapore wasn't long enough to explore - but you could take a break there for a couple of days before continuing your travelling. It's easy to check out Visa requirements online.

Together with a girlfriend, we hired an apartment for two weeks on the outskirts of Perth which worked out v. well. Simply furnished, small open plan kitchen and very accessible to the beach and transport routes into the centre of Perth. I don't remember the cost, but it didn't seem to be overly expensive.

We went for a wedding, and then spent most of the time as beach-bums trying, unsuccessfully, to windsurf. I remember thoroughly enjoying the Berntd Museum of Anthropology. Fascinating.

There is a good suburban train network in Perth so if you do look for accommodation look at the location of stations. But my advice would be to see if your family out there can arrange a housesitting gig for you - people in Australia and NZ are more used to this arrangement. There is also a website which allows you to arrange house-swaps, which might be worth considering.

Good thing about going to Perth is that once you have done the long flight to Singapore it is much shorter flight to Perth. If you go via HK rather more flying time.

Singapore is well worth a couple of days stop over - if you feel you can afford the time.

If you have the time, go via South Africa - have a week in Capetown then fly on to Perth. It helps no end with the jet lag and gives you a lovely stop off 'holiday'!

We flew from Manchester to Aukland and stopped over in Kuala Lumper on the way there and back and made that an extra part of the holiday.

Very cheap, accommodation and food. We visited the rain forests (beware male monkeys), a glorious Hindu temple, saw the sights, great shops both modern shopping malls and quirky little Malaysian ones, bought some wonderful exotic souvenirs. Everyone was very helpful, friendly and I'd definitely recommend it.

We stopped in Dubai, not long enough to really explore though.
Perth is a fine modern city with good shops and restaurants. I don't know about accommodation as we stayed with friends.
Penguin island is worth a visit, as are the wonderful vineyards around the outskirts of Perth, with lots of wine tasting. And there is a chocolate factory, eat all you want!
The transport systems are extremely good and it's easy to get around.

The new hub for Qantas is Dubai, and you can fly to and from Dubai from regional airports in the UK. The man sitting next to me from Brisbane to Dubai last year was then getting a connection to Manchester.
(We still had to use Heathrow as Qantas do not fly in or out of our nearest regional airport.)
We didn't stop in Dubai but sometimes an overnighter is included in the cost.
I did enjoy stopping over in Singapore when the Qantas hub was there. I am not sure if any other airlines fly from regional airports.

Try Wotif for some bargains in accommodation.

Auckland rather a long way from Perth confused
S Africa very expensive detour Gally - not exactly en route is it? And jet lag is caused by E_W travel not N-S [confused}

Gally Thu 27-Mar-14 12:39:17

Not exactly en route but it's a far easier trip; only a minimal difference in SA time and then a much shorter flight to Perth so the time change is easier once you arrive there. I would certainly recommend it wink

It doesn't make any difference if the short leg is first or second, as it the reverse coming back.

I think seasider inferred they would be on a tight budget, so an overnight break included in the price of the flight would be a good thing to look out for. Bargains are found when you book earlier rather than later.
Australian tourist visas are free and easily obtained online - but be careful not to be caught by one of the scam sites that look official but are not, and will charge a fee.

I would apply for the visas before booking the flights, as we have enthusiastically booked flights, realised our visas had run out then I had to wait quite some time for mine to be processed. It was turned down and after a worrying week or so I managed to speak to someone who said that it was probably because someone else had the same name and dob as me - they do check very carefully.

We went to Oz with tickets from STA they advised on cheapest route that suited our needs. X

STA sorted out my daughter's gap year travel around Australia, then she went back a couple of years later, staying for the most time in Perth, having visited Singapore on the way. They were very helpful and knowledgeable, and did it on all on a small budget for her. The person doing her schedule knew Perth well and found accommodation in cheaper places which was perfect for her and meant she could meet up socially with some other single travellers they put her in touch with.

Autumn is a great time to visit Perth seasider, the weather is normally pleasant with warm sunny days in the mid twenties and cooler nights. It is only an eighteen to twenty hour flight to Perth, so is manageable if you prefer not to stop over enroute.

And you avoid flying over the GABA! X

We went to Perth via Singapore, and opted to have a 12 hour stop over at Changi Ambassador Transit Hotel- where you can book in by the hour (min 6 hours). It's within airport so you don't clear immigration. It's very basic but lovely to have a proper sleep and shower, and then continue the journey refreshed.

We also had a free bus tour roug Singapore provided by Singapore Airlines, but next time I'd have just the sleep, as we were too shattered to take much in.

We rented an apartment near our family through stayz and it was lovely www.stayz.com.au/accommodation/wa/perth/perth-beaches/49749. It was much cheaper than hotels, and we had our own place but near enoguh to meet all the family. Have a wonderful trip.

Thanks Sunflower that's really interesting. Stayz look to have lots of accommodation so will check them out. smile

I hate long haul flights and we mostly stop off for a few days on route to wherever we are flying too. It makes the trip more interesting and you get to see another part of the world.
Do your research and just book into an apartment or hotel for the stay via one of the many sites on the web.
There is a big world out there just for the taking.
Have a great time.

Which airlines stop in Singapore now? Is it only Singapore Airlines?
