We have finally decided that we will go to Madeira for a holiday this year, probably August. Apart from having a vague idea that it is fairly mountainous, you can shoot down a hill on a sort of toboggan, and it has a cable car I know nothing else. Has anyone been, and if so, what would they recommend?

The walking is good because you are high up in the mountains but the footpaths are flat because they run round the mountains next to the lava days (water channels). You can get tours which take you up, give you a map or have a guide, and then pick you up later in the day.we drove up but had to retrace our footsteps.
Funchal is the best place to stay.

The island has some really wonderful resturants at prices that are low. The north side of the island is totally different to the south and a visit to the west is a must. Everyone speaks English and it always seems a safe place to be.
The front in Funchal is a bit of a mess with the building of a new marina, garden and cruise berth but it's still the best place to stay. A visit to the indoor flower market just to the right of the twin rivers and a trip up the cable car in the same area also good. The cable car takes you up to beautiful gardens.

And don't forget to go for high tea at Reid'ssmile and visit the botanical garden too. Personally, as I love flowers, I'd prefer to go in early July or late June (early June can be a bit foggy).

We got the public bus from Funchal to Nuns Valley - stunning scenery and good value - had a wander around, including a scenic short levada walk - and got a later bus back.

The fish market in Funchal is quite an experience too.
