San Francisco airport to Amtrak question

I was enthralled by the freight trains that were about a mile/mile and a half long. One went along close to the seafront of San Diego every night at about 10 and everthing had to stop. Found San Francisco very big and scary.

Thank you all. Maybe we'll look at shared van to Sacramento. We did the Amtrak from Colfax to Reno last year which was spectacular. We didn't care for Reno though.

I notice that there are plenty of bookable on-line taxi and shared-van shuttle services from SFO airport to Sacramento and I would use one of those. We got on very well with them when in Los Angeles, where the public transportation was very strange, to say the least! I would, however, recommend a ride on Amtrak whilst you are there, slow and scenic though it might be. Day trip to Santa Barbara, perhaps, or a longer one to San Diego would be nice on the Californian Zephyr. Watch out though, not all Americans like to be photographed!

Looking on Wikipedia they seem to have well established bus links to Emeryville.

I wondered if there was a plane from San Francisco to Sacramento.

Tegen Emeryville seems to be the starting point for the train which goes to Sacramento. There are no direct flights from UK to Sacramento. I suppose we could change planes somewhere but I don't really fancy that. You would think such a big city would have a better link with the main rail system.

Where exactly have you got to meet the train ruby? Could you not fly to your destination? Americans seem to fly just about everywhere.

I agree with Papa. If your DS wants to do this for you, let him and he probably has good reason to insist on doing this too. Bon voyage.

Take a taxi or private mini-bus. Hang the cost. Better safe than sorry!

Please can anyone tell me the best way to get from the airport to join up with Amtrak train to Sacramento? BART to Embarcadero, Thruway bus to Emeryville? Has anyone done this and is it easy? I don't want to ask DS for advice as they will insist on driving to SF to meet us and last time the drive took four hours. They are afraid of us changing lines etc in 'bad' areas. I would like to have all the journey planned and booked before we tell them when we are going, (next spring).
