Oregon was fabulous. Pioneer country.
Forestry and fabulous scenery.
Portland city is very quirky. Visit the rather hippy Hawthorne area and beautiful Japanese Gardens.
The wonderful scenic Pacific coastal route down to California goes via the giant redwoods.

Oh, Colorado, Michigan, anywhere round there in the autumn! And New England too, and Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont. The autumn colours are magnificent. Mind you, you have to book early because it is a very popular time.

I'd save the warmer states for the spring - places like Minnesota and Nebraska don't really do spring, just sort of segue into summer in July! Even San Diego in January was on the cool side.

Off to Minnesota in July, via Illinois and Nebraska maybe.

Wow! It seems to be an amazing and exciting journey. The all places that you have selected are wonderful and I am sure you will have a great time there. I visited the Niagara Falls from the Canadian side on Christmas and it was the remarkable view. The firework was also very nice.

Should have added California, of course, (everything you would expect!) and Florida, though Florida was mainly where DH and I met up when he was on a posting in Belize, or for various international conferences. Key West was the best bit - the drive there is stunning.

Places like the Dakotas are interesting too, but as a side line on the way to say, Minnesota.

One of our best trips was from Phoenix Arizona- up to Sedona- in red rock country- we stayed in Sedona a few days and it was magical- then up to Grand Canyon, and on to Arches, and Mesa Verde, Canyon de Cheilly and then on to Colorado, over Berthoud Pass and to Grand Lake and Estes National Park and return via Denver.

The other trip we did was via Boston and Cape Cod, then all the way down to Williamsburg, Virginia, with a few days in the first ever National Park, Sky Line Ridge and the blue mountains- memorable for us as it is where wer encountered our first wild black bears, a mother and 2 cubs up in an oak tree.

We would love to do the West Coast up from San Francisco, via Montana and up to Vancouver Island and the Rockies- one day.

We have done a huge amount of traveling since we retired 8 years ago. Always organize everything ourselves.
If you are thinking of traveling in the States, one of our memorable trips was coast to coast, NYC to California but part of this covered the state of Utah.
Start off in Yellowstone Park then make your way south calling in at all the National Parks and reserves on the way finishing up at the Grand Canyon.
We camped all the way and it was an amazing trip and I could highly recommend it.

Sounds an amazing trip I hope you have a wonderful time, all of you ladies whose partners travel with them are so lucky , my OH can't/won't fly so any abroad trips are either alone or with other family members who are restricted to school holidays.. he doesn't know what he is missing as I have several friends in the US who would be only too delighted for us to visit.. I'm jealous of you all

Olive I am accompanying DH on an extended boat trip through the Eastern USA, a few months there and then a few months at home. The last part of the trip took us from Jacksonville in Florida, through Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina to Norfolk, Virginia.

It was awesome, from the wild Atlantic coast to the low country of Georgia and South Carolina, to the Outer Banks where Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first flight, and where on Roanoke Island the first, vanished colony of English settlers is remembered. Savannah and Charleston are full of history and will blow your mind.

Add to that mix wonderful food and the most hospitable people you could imagine.

You could just as easily cover the same area by car.

If you're on the East Coast and can get up as far as New York State, Vermont and Maine, the scenery is absolutely stunning. The coast of Maine is wild and beautiful

I only managed to get to the US a couple of years ago. I absolutely loved it, completely different to the rather prejudicial ideas you get here! :-) Americans are so friendly, hospitable and upfront and I really enjoyed the food although the quantities had me beaten.

We did a similar trip to Granjura but flying in and out of Las Vegas. Those national parks are incredible. We booked as we went except in the hot spots like Yellowstone. The small state parks are well worth visiting too but I've heard a lot of them have been closed since the recession. Las Vegas is everything I disapprove of - and I loved it, but two days was plenty long enough.

We're off to the Gulf of Cortez and California on a boat in late February. We want to head up the coast from San Diego to San Fracisco afterwards - not booking anything so hopefully the hotels won't be too full. Does anyone know what the weather is likely to like?

We're of to Chicago later in the year...a great city!
