We are asking for your help to keep that standing. The coastal path from Ventnor to Steephill Cove passes through the beautiful Flowers Brook Meadow. In January this year residents were devastated to discover that a private firm comprising the Island Council and two private sector companies were proposing to shut it off for 2 years so that they could install an industrial size 23x9x15 metre electrical substation/turbine room.
The Council had been unsuccessful in attracting tidal firms, large or small, to invest in a scheme to harness the tide off St Catherine's Point. It is scientifically unsound and unworkable.
The Council were so determined that they formed a company with two Island businessmen (who had no expertise or funds and a history of opening and dissolving over 50 companies). They then loaned this company £1 million of public funds. They have shut public toilets and refused to clean our Blue Flag beaches putting our tourist industry which brings our economy half a billion pounds annually at risk.
The Council of course determine planning applications and they have told us that it is perfectly legal and it will go ahead regardless.
