They won't have after this June, it is being discontinued.

I have never been asked for the paper bit in any country other than UK and have hired cars all over Europe. UK seems to be the only country that has a paper addition to a licence.

Rather than the reasons given in the article.

It's getting far harder to travel anywhere now without being double-checked, presumably to be able to keep track of terrorists.

Which was why I mentioned the limited access. There is free and fairly accessible wifi in France but it's meant to be for residents only. I suppose elsewhere you would have to find an internet café - or hope that the carhire firm knows all about it and will sort it for you.

So presumably if you don't or can't your car hire is terminated or invalid and.....?
DH says it'll make him think twice especially if we were off the beaten track exploring.

After 3 days you have to re-apply online

I wonder how many will get caught out by this?
There may be a number of people who aren't used to using the Internet and as for access, that could prove very tricky-what happens if you miss the 3 days deadline?

Exactly

I think once you have hired the car you are ok, but if you want to change it for another, I suppose you would need access to the internet. Not always easily found on the continent.

This looks a real pain for anyone deciding to hirer a car abroad if they have not requested the code before they leave, even then the code is only valid for 3 days.

How on earth they expect people to find this out, I have no idea. I suspect a fair few holidays of people without internet may be spoiled.
