Are you going to Greece? Help the refugees

We have just returned from our first Greek holiday where we met a woman, originally from Rotherham, who is helping refugees. We were in Kos but she said that the refugees are pretty much everywhere. It is not true that they are quickly processed and move on and it is also not true that Brits are as portrayed by the Daily Mail. In fact most tourists are compassionate and do what they can to help.

We took children's clothes, colouring books etc. They urgently need pretty much everything including toiletries and medicines so if you are going to any part of Greece for a holiday please take whatever you can to help.

Here is a link to the people who are helping in Kos and who may be able to put you in touch with someone where you are going:

I heard something about people coming from Nigeria who are not fleeing anything and do worry about the countries all these people are leaving behind. In the same way as I was furious when we sent people to India to recruit doctors and nurses when their own country needed them.

Surely there is some way we can sort out who is genuinely fleeing from danger and those who simply want to leave their own country for a better life rather than staying where they are and making life better. What will become of these countries if their middle classes all leave?

Those who want to come for a better life usually come by plane.

I also read somewhere that most illegal immigrants in this country are from places like Australia, and they have outstayed their visas.

I was going to write good point.
But then I started to think about an official somewhere trying to work it out, and people may just lie.
And the officials are not going to be able to go to the country to find out. Though I suppose there must be rules somewhere about which countries people are likely to flee from, and which not.

True. But the country wants their skills. Needs their skills.

But we do know that there are assylum seekers too.

Just an idea, what if we had staff in our embassies/consulates (not sure of the difference!) to cope with this? If they 'processed' people wouldn't they be more likely to get it right? Am I being too simplistic? I realise that in some countries we don't have embassies but we could surely use nearby countries? If this worked there wouldn't be any need for people to put themselves in so much danger on the sea.

That's what people used to do and some still do. Its not that easy to just decide to live here. Think about the American green card system. You can't just turn up in the USA and hope for the best! (Although Trump seems to think that Mexicans do!). I am a bit concerned about some of the economic migrants but I'm biased because of the wealthy Somali drugs gangsters here. Several recently imprisoned for gun crimes. Refugees are one thing people who are just plain 'at it' are something else!

durhamjen Thu 13-Aug-15 18:22:35

How many embassies/consulates are still open in war-torn areas of Africa?

durhamjen Fri 14-Aug-15 22:35:41

Here's another idea, Nonnie.

community.sumofus.org/petitions/goldman-made-450-million-euros-from-crashing-the-greek-economy-it-should-return-the-profits

If Goldman Sachs had to repay then Greece would not be in such difficulties, and might not be telling migrants to go home. Can Goldman Sachs be made to, any more than we can be made to give them back the Elgin Marbles?

Nonnie Sat 15-Aug-15 16:40:37

How many embassies/consulates are still open in war-torn areas of Africa? That was why I suggested: ^ I realise that in some countries we don't have embassies but we could surely use nearby countries? ^ They would be a lot nearer than Europe wherever they are in Africa!

According to David Cameron, I think[if I got his gist right] that most that are trying to come here are economic migrants and not asylum seekers.

The two are quite different in my opinion.

durhamjen Sat 15-Aug-15 22:45:47

Do you always believe everything that Cameron says?

durhamjen Sat 15-Aug-15 22:50:16

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/aug/10/10-truths-about-europes-refugee-crisis

Some facts about the migrants.

What do you believe - them or Dave?

Ana Sat 15-Aug-15 22:52:56

Of course the Guardian always gives impartial information, doesn't it? hmm

durhamjen Sat 15-Aug-15 23:25:37

You wouldn't have said that if you'd read the link. Most of the information is from reputable refugee statistical groups.

durhamjen Sat 15-Aug-15 23:26:19

David Cameron cannot be said to be impartial.

(That was for the SumofUs link!)

Cameron has not the foggiest how many are leaving their countries because they are economic migrants , considering his attitude towards these people he couldn't very well say they are refugees could he .

These swarming economic migrants or these swarming refugees !

www.theguardian.com/world/2015/aug/14/kos-migrants-stadium-like-a-prison-greek-island-refugees-immigration

The last two paragraphs say it all. It's also interesting to note that tourists queue for ferries to take them to Turkey for 20 euros, whilst the refugees are charged 50 times more than that to get to Kos from Turkey. If only they knew.

durhamjen Sun 16-Aug-15 11:29:33

Thanks Nfk.
Still only 385 signatures. That's nearly one per million euros that Goldman Sachs made from Greece.
What could Greece do with that 450 million euros......?

soontobe Sun 16-Aug-15 16:15:31

I dont think David Cameron lies. I would expect him to find out some facts before he opens his mouth.

soontobe Sun 16-Aug-15 16:19:30

There are several points in that link which I will talk about at some point.

rosesarered Sun 16-Aug-15 20:40:57

Nonnies OP turned into the usual Socialist circus.

Jane10 Sun 16-Aug-15 20:52:35

Yup roses that's why I gave up on it.

Ana Sun 16-Aug-15 20:55:19

I wonder how many more threads will be taken over? 'This government' seems to be held responsible for all the ills of the world...hmm
