We are thinking of doing a trip to South Africa / Mauritius next year. The SA part would consist of a few days in Capetown, then we would hire a car to go through the Winelands, to Hermanus for Whalewatching and along the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth. In all that would take about 10 days. We're keen to go, but nervous about the security aspect. All our accommodation would be booked in advance. Has anyone any experience of travel in SA? Is security a big issue or are we being over cautious? We're quite sensible travellers and know not to put temptation in anyone's way. hmm

Hermanus whale watching is only around September/October though. The resort has gone a bit seedy, but there are some very nice B&Bs- Stellenbosch and Frenchoek are very safe- make sure you visit Verhelegen and Boschendal and get their picnic hamper. Keep your wits about you and travel day time only. We had no problems at all.

For 10 days though, Cape Town, Frenchhoek, Hermanus, Camps Bay area and the Cape of Good Hope- is plenty. I wouldn't add the Garden Route in 10 days personally.

We travelled around S.A. in a minibus on an organised tour with a S.A. guide and professional driver. One lesson we quickly learned was that when stopped by S.A. police (happened regularly and arbitrarily they tend to hang around in groups at complex road junctions and are well armed) you say little, agree with any 'charges' and pay up quietly!

We went a few years ago but to Pretoria, the Kruger and Durban. we loved it all our hotels were wonderful, the service, food and wine outstanding. I would love to go back to do the parts you are proposing to do. Have a lovely time xx

It's safe to travel in SA, especially on the routes mentioned, and during the day, as you say you are experienced tourists.

That's a beautiful part of the country with sweeping vistas and dramatic landscapes.

You'll have a marvellous time, I'm sure.
