Travel Insurance

Absolutely never travel anywhere abroad without adequate travel insurance, particularly America. If you need treatment of any kind the first thing they will ask for is your travel insurance. If you are taken to hospital by ambulance if they know you have no insurance you will end up with very second rate care. You also need to ensure any insurance includes emergency repatriation to the UK. I visit the US regularly and have many relatives there. Not having insurance could lose your home and everything you own. Believe me they are extremely aggressive at pursuing monies owed. Totally not worth the risk.

The quote of £1208.64 is just for ONE holiday (if it was annual I would pay it). My operation was 3 years ago, if it was 5 or more it would make a difference and being 80 years old doesn't help either !!!

Two friends-he has some sort of serious pituitary problem,she has had a mastectomy about 5 years ago- mentioned recently they had paid £900 for travel insurance for USA They are 76 .So I would think you should get it for less than that?I would think it worth asking the cancerc support networks?

it may seem expensive- just depend how much you want to see them.

For me the only question would be, can I afford it or not.

And if not, would it be acceptable, in their cirucmstance, to ask son for help.

Definitely don't go to the USA without health insurance.

Is it for an annual policy? If so, it's £100 per month, so maybe worth it? Cram in as many holidays as you can next year!

I agree with others, it is too risky going anywhere without insurance- if you did, sod's law would take over and it is not worth it.

Follow the advice of others by finding a specialist broker.

Maybe think of changing your bank account or opening another eg the RBS provide "free" insurance but I do not know what the upper age is.

Feel for you jaymbee. I wonder if a specialist broker could help? I believe cancer research also have some information. Think in your shoes I would try to find a specialist broker and let them do the hard work. Do agree with others, insurance is essential for peace of mind. fingers crossed for you.

Just don't chance it without insurance- please as it could cost $$$$$$$ if anything happens- really really not worth the risk.

But yes, shop around- and be prepared to accept that due to age and pre-existing conditions, it will cost quite a bit. Worth it so you can visit your loved ones with peace of mind.

My brother didn't bother last Christmas to get insurance to go to the Domenican Republic- and it has cost him an absolute fortune as he got very ill as soon as he got there. He also couldn't afford repatriation, and had to wait for his scheduled economy flight 3 weeks later - still very ill and with the scars of a massive abcess on his rear end - to be taken straight to hospital by ambulance on return. He is now in a rehab place waiting for a place in a OAP home (age 68) and with huge bills he can't pay.

As soon as I enter the C word the price trebles, also some firms won't even give me a quote because I'm going for 50 days (to cover Thanksgiving, Christmas and three Birthdays !!!

I wouldn't chance it, you could be landed with horrendous bills if you have an accident or something, unless of course you can afford those costs.

Have you tried the comparison websites? Or look on Martin Lewis's website?

Another alternative is to see if you can upgrade your bank account, because some of them offer insurance up age 85.
