I spent a holiday in Malta one February and it was cold, wet and windy so beware.
We spend two months each winter on the Costa del Sol and the temp is around 20c lovely to waken to blue skies and sunshine all day long, good for the stiff joints!! Never had a problem with the language most Spaniards speak very good English.
Once shared an apartment with another couple never again!!

I would have reservations about over-wintering in Malta - it may not be that warm in January and February (although warmer than the UK), it does rain and the Med can throw up sudden storms and winds.
Coupled with probably having no central heating, I still think the Canaries would be more consistent temperature-wise and not too hot - 18 or 19C?

However well you know someone is it a good idea to share an apartment with them for months?

margrech if you go to the south of the Canaries, I agree it maybe too hot but it is very pleasant in the north, and the majority of people speak English.

I prefer to dine in a backstreet restaurant where English is not necessarily spoken. I can get by with my pidgin Spanish especially for menus.

If it's guaranteed sun and no language problem you want, it has to be Gibraltar.
If you decided on that, fly into Malaga where car hire is very cheap and then drive onto Gibraltar.
You would want a car if you stay on the rock as there's not enough to occupy you for a long holiday.

Thanks Petra, Spain has the language problem, you dont find that many locals speaking English, and the Canaries is probably way too hot. Thanks for your intervention though, much appreciated

Malta may be pleasant in the winter but it can also be chilly with cold winds.

The Canaries could be a better choice.

Mercury are very good at these winter 'holidays in Malta. We have done it a couple of times.
But if you want real winter sun there are always good long term deals in mainland Spain or the canaries.

We all know what its like to live in the UK in the cold winter months. Heating the home costs you and arm and a leg while going out has its limitations. Its fine for the younger people who have jobs to go to, but for people on a pension, doesn't it make more sense to live in a place like Malta where the winters are mild and you get the sun and clear blue skies guaranteed most days. Finding an inexpensive place to rent is easy since it is in the low season. What's more going with other like minded couples and sharing an apartment reduces your costs considerably. Are there any sites that can make this happen?
