travelling with grandchildren abroad

I think DD was told about this years ago as she travels with DGS and without SIL frequently.

It is to do with child abduction/kidnapping by a parent who may not have custody of the child - better safe than sorry.

In the past we have taken our GD abroad and never thought about the consequences, never any problem.
Now I would think twice and get a letter from her mum, better safe than sorry.
She is 19 now so no problem, the last time was 10 years ago.

I took my eldest DGS (then aged 6 ) to France at Christmas. There was no problem with his passport or mine, although I still use my maiden name on my passport! (so different from his, which is DD’s name, and my married name!) no one asked me to provide any letter from his parents??‍♀️ and we went through customs easily

I’ve taken a signed letter from my daughter when taking my GD abroad haven’t ever been asked for it but take no chances. Once they asked my GD who the lady with her was, of course she said my Nan ?

When we flew to U.K. a couple of months ago I saw a woman being stopped at passport control about her small grandson who was with her. It must have all been sorted because they were on the flight.
It has been suggested for some time that one adult travelling with a child has letters from any parent not with them.

Various conditions such as this have been in place for many years. Part of the problem is that requirements change quite often and quite suddenly.
