Timeshare resales?

Just that really. Has anyone any experience of selling a timeshare? We're thinking of doing this but not sure whether it's actually possible.

Our friends eventually had to pay to get rid of their timeshare they did it through their lawyer . Nobody wanted to buy ot they could not even give it way . They were stuck with yearly bills and did not use it as they were getting older. Beware of companies offering to sell yours at a cost.

After a year of having a very desirable property in Antigua for sale for over a year for peanuts I offloaded it to the ex in the divorce. He wasn't very happy about it but as I can no longer fly due to my auto immune condition it was the only option.

We sold one of our two Units at Rutland Water before we moved. Sold it to someone we knew- and got fair money for it. The second unit gets very high points value so we will keep until lease runs out.

No intention of ever selling our Unit in Tuscany, which is in perpetuity and which we never exchange.

Depends very much where it is- and the cost of yearly maintenance. Is it registered with RCI, Interval International or Dial an Exchange?

It's via Interval International. A beautiful 5* resort but we've been here so often and we're a bit sick of it. Family and friends have used it too but I've always paid the maintenance charge. We're here just now. I might try to see if they want it back.
(I know. Its a forlorn hope!)

Why don't you exchange it for somewhere you would want to visit surely that's the point of Interval otherwise what are you with them for?

Why not swap it with somewhere else? That is the whole point of Timeshare. Our was 30 mins from us, so we always swapped it all over the world. We bought the weeks because we could use the facilities (pool, sauna, steam, jacuzzi, tennis, squash, billiards, pitch and put, gym, etc) year round.

You can also exchange with 'Dial an Exchange' - much cheaper, and you can swap a 1 bed or 2 bed, for a much larger unit, for same price. With RCI, you can also swap for cruises too.

Why not advertise it in your local paper? Be prepared to sell at very reasonable price though. Is it on a Lease (how many years left) or in perpetuity?

You could also arrange private swaps with friends who have timeshare or property abroad.

I have one and have done lots of swaps. If it’s just that you’re tired of the same place I can heartily recommend swapping.

The whole family went to Florida last year on a swap.

In Scotland you cannot just give one back . It passes to your heirs whether they want it or not and there is no lease to have a time limit on . you are stuck with the maintenance until you somehow get rid of it . If you are getting infirm there is little chance of swapping and that costs more money as well.

It's not in Scotland. It's in Madeira. It's a 30 year one and we've had 17 years so far. The whole swapping thing seems far, far more complex than we were promised when we were suckered invited in to their system. Somehow, for whatever reason, we can never swap it for anywhere else.
I don't even want money for it. Just want rid. Oh well. Thanks for responses.

I am surprised you can't swap- we have had virtually 100s of swaps all over the world. This is how we discovered our TS in Tuscany.

I hear you that you want rid- but in the meantime, get in touch with Dial-an-Exchange. Is it one of the Pestanas resorts - we did 2 swaps with Madeira we really enjoyed.

Nowadays, we mainly swap for spa resorts in the Alps, close to here and that would cost a lot more than maintenance - so win win.

Thanks Jura but the Pestana group are direct competitors of the Savoy group where our timeshare is. To make thing worse the company are in the process of building a colossal new hotel - more than 550 new timeshares to sell so little chance of ours being of interest.
However, ours is a beautiful place and in the best location. I suspect we'll just have to suck it up and let others continue to use it. Only 13 more years to go. 😐

Nothing stopping you from renting it privately, be it to friends, be it via adverts in your local paper, etc- and as said, worth looking at Dial an Exchange.

At least to cover your maintenance fee and guest certificate. I am surprised you have found it so difficult to swap via II - in my experience, they have been really good.

Re-thinking about this one. Have you put a note on the Resort board, in resort or on line- to say you have one unit to sell at low price?

Thanks jura but absolutely not. No possibility of the resort letting me advertise my week for sale on some sort of notice board there. I think the management would combust!
I have spoken to the sales people and they suggested a reliable resale company, offered to sell it for me (for a price and no guarantee of sale as they have all the new ones to sell) or I can renounce and walk away.
Currently pondering the way ahead. I'll contact that resale company when we get home, discuss with family and proceed from there. I was glad to find out that we could just hand it back.
