Rail Travel using split tickets

I once did this from Edinburgh to Cheltenham. I had a handful of tickets from AtoB, CtoD DtoX with some very odd ‘stops’ involved but didn't have to change once. It was a win win journey for me!

Agree with Maggie1806 we were caught out by this as our first train was running late and we were refused boarding on a second later train unless we paid a ticket transfer fee. Best to buy an open ticket for the second leg of the journey if it's not too expensive.

One snag with split tickets is if your train is cancelled you may not get a full refund. I bought a split ticket to Llanfairpwll from Leeds changing at Chester. The Leeds to Chester train was cancelled due to flooding so I’ll get a refund, the Chester to Llanfairpwll train was running so no refund is due. Just something to bear in mind if you’re buying tickets for travel in advance.
