Scrap dangerous 'smart motorways' petition

Hope everyone is sharing this with their friends and family. Remember, it could be them stuck in a live lane with a juggernaut coming up behind them at 60mph ??????

Apparently a woman from Rotherham whose partner was a victim of this crazy motorway scheme is suing (or maybe is in the process of suing) Highways England on the grounds of corporate manslaughter.

It is a scandal that such a scheme was every introduced and I hope it is soon completely abandoned.

How frightening Liz46 and if that happens on a smart motorway your lights will not be showing that you've stopped. I had my electrics fail on a country road in the pitch dark once. Couldn't see a thing! I just coasted to a standstill and they came back on but I was on my own and it was very scary.

I meant to also say 'thanks' for highlighting this problem and starting this petition .

Have signed. Until I saw the Panorama programme I didn't really know what smart motorways were. I thought it was something to do with phones as that was the image on the signs. The distance between the 'safe area's is far too long. Where is the technology that is supposed to make these motorways 'safe'? It's only on some bits of the M25, not on all the other motorways. As a disabled dtiver, I wouldn't really be able to get out of my car if there was an accident so I would be a 'sitting duck'.
This is madness.

Signed. My husband broke down on the motorway once and luckily was travelling along the inside lane so was able to pull onto the hard shoulder. A patrol car pulled up and the officer asked why he had not put his hazard lights on. All the electrics had failed!

Just keeping a tally of the signatures and it has now reached 218,000 which is 18,000 more in the last 38 hours.

I agree Chestnut I think the programme gave some frightening figures of how many of the cameras etc weren’t working.

I don't feel even the shorter distances between refuges are 'safe'. If your car stops it only takes a minute of two before something awful happens. The system has to spot you and put the restriction lights on, and what if the lorry driver is looking at his phone and doesn't notice the signage? ?

I watched the Panorama programme with disbelief. The pilot on the M42 had refuges every 5/600 metres but when the pilot was rolled out it seems that the distances was changed to 2+ miles unilaterally by the HA. I don’t understand why there’s been no public rolling of heads. Perhaps if the court case goes ahead we might learn more. The motorway I was on last week was having its ‘smartness’ increased by miles and miles.

Another 13,000 have signed since 8.30pm last night!

I signed the petition when Change.Org sent me one of their frequent emails a couple of days ago. I think the general consensus is smart motorways are anything but smart.

I'm going to sign it too. How ridiculous - and disgraceful to design and allow to be introduced a motorway that would inevitably cause unnecessary deaths. Doesn't the government have a duty of care to all its citizens or do a few unfortunate deaths count only as collateral damage in the face of these grandiose projects?

Possibly or hopefully too many trying to sign at present as I haven't been able to load the page. Will try tomorrow. I too thought it crazy idea!
