My partner and I are marking our milestone birthdays in March next year by going to New York City. I changed my surname by deed poll a couple of years ago after my marriage broke up. On the deed poll information it stated that if I still have several years left on my passport I could still use it but to make sure my airline ticket is under my old surname.

My question is with regards to health insurance. Do I take it out in my old name too and hope the insurance company don't wriggle out of the contract as that was my previous name? Or do I put the insurance in my new name?

Ask your insurance company.

Would it not be easier to change everything now as you still have time? That would make life so much easier in my opinion.

Look up the passport regulations - I think you can change the name and keep the years remaining on your new passport. You have time before next March.

Looked it up and I am wrong. You do need to pay for a new one. As Tanith says check with your insurance company. Sorry.

If you are going to the US I would think you would be better off getting everything into the same name before you go. You might still need Covid paperwork etc as well. It would save any unexpected complications should it be in different names.

The US can be quite pernickety about things like that.

Thanks all. I’ll bite the bullet and pay for a new passport methinks. Especially as I’m in my late 60s laid up with a triple fracture of my ankle. Who knows what might happen.
