Croatia

We did a weeks cruise on a small yacht with 30 passengers. Was one of our best holidays. Got to see different places every day. The coastline is beautiful. The sea is so blue and crystal clear. Keep meaning to book again.

A lovely place. We were there just before Covid hit on a cruise and I’d go there again in a heartbeat if it weren’t for the fact that no one’s going anywhere from Australia just now.

We flew to Split, which is magical, the island hopped, finding accommodation as we went. Korcula was especially beautiful.
Then Dubrovnik, which was disappointing as it's been ruined by all the massive cruise ships that pull in there.
Zagreb, however, was quirky and fun to stay in.

Croatia is lovely to visit but the south is much busier than the north, especially Dubrovnik.
Try somewhere like Opatija, an old style resort that is very relaxing and within easy distance of other places like Pula.

I was going to mention don’t go if you want sandy beaches and oh yes the urchins can be very painful.

There are a few but yes, they are mostly stony.

We found one on Korcula but that was after we had hired a boat to explore.

We last went in early September. The sea was fine, but the hotel swimming pools were freezing...

Oh, Lucca, if you intend to swim from the beaches get some plastic beach shoes. All the beaches we ever saw were stony and hell to walk over with bare feet!

And watch out for sea urchins on the rocks

It's a lovely country but it depends what type of holiday you like.

You could cruise from port to port on a larger ship or go on a yacht cruise round the islands which would take a few passengers.
I don't know if the hydrofoils are working but they are a fast way of visiting places of interest.

Split is interesting, it was the place that the Roman Emperor Diocletian chose to build his retirement palace. However busy Dubrovnik is, it is well worth visiting for a day as it has been sympathetically restored after the war.

The islands are lovely for a relaxing holiday eg Hvar, Korcula.

*Canadian gran* the second cruise we did was on “ My Way” , from Split to Zadar . The first one was Providenca, and from Dubrovnik to Split.We preferred the islands on the first cruise.
As I think I’ve said before, the food on the Saga boat was certainly not gourmet , but unlike most other providers , there is lunch and dinner every day for the same price as others where you need to go ashore to eat except for a couple of days. There is nothing to stop you eating out if you want to of course. Also Saga included travel insurance.

Our boat gave us a 3 course lunch so lavish that you hardly needed anything else to eat that day.
They did a Captain's dinner one night, apart from that they said that eating out on the islands was a help to their economy. Which seems fair enough to me.

We went with the Katerina Line. I don't know if they're still operating, it was several years ago.

I think that places where cruise ships call very often don't get quite the revenue they expected because so much is provided on the ship.

I remember Trogir being gorgeous.

We have been to Croatia many times. Dubrovnik is very interesting but very busy. We based ourselves nearby on the Lapad peninsula where there are many hotels to suit all budgets. We had the best of both worlds. We’ve also been to Rovinj, which is really pretty and lots to see/do there too. Pula, Porec and Cavtat are also lovely. Croatia is beautiful, the food lovely and the people, we found, friendly and welcoming to British visitors.

We have done two small ship cruises (32 passengers) with Saga includes Dubrovnik and Split plus islands on the way up.some people added a couple of nights in Dubrovnik st the end.We are not “ cruise”:people normally but loved this

We did one of those a few years ago. It was lovely. Ours 'did' several islands, started and finished at Dubrovnik. We're not 'cruise people' either, but this was so different.

The boat was great and the food that came out of the tiny galley was superb.

We'd previously had a 'land' holiday centred on Split. I really like Croatia.

We have had 2 holidays in Croatia, one on a small ship (38 passengers), one in a hotel. The first holiday started in Zagreb and we had a coach tour to Zadar via the Plitvice lakes. Beautiful! Then on to Split where we boarded our little ship. Then cruised many islands, all are beautiful. Opposite to normal cruising, you cruise during the day and moor up at night. Sometimes you have to walk through/across several boats that moor up parallel to the shore. Goodish mobility needed. I would definitely go to Croatia again, friendly people, good food, weather and scenery. Go!

Atqui, I have a similar cruise in mind for whenever it is safe to travel again. I have looked at Cruise Croatia, but will also look at Saga. We are not cruisers either, but this type of cruise on a small vessel really appeals to me.

Hopefully all will be fine by next year an, acquaintance just come back from there with Covid ?
