We’re thinking of driving to Loch Tay for a week’s holiday but, as it’s over 5 hours from Greater Manchester, we would appreciate any suggestions for a one night hotel/motel stop somewhere on the route. We’re familiar with the route as far as Carlisle, but beyond that it’s a journey into the unknown.😎

It’s a little over half-way but the New Lanark hotel is nice, powered by hydro-electricity from the neighbouring waterfalls, which also power the neighbouring, World Heritage site mill and original working village, which is well worth visiting.

Thanks Siope - I’ll look it up. 😎👍

New Lanark is lovely. So interesting. Would be a very nice addition to your whole holiday. The falls of Clyde there as well as the preserved old village are terrific.

We really like the Premier inn just outside Carlisle . Compared to thers it is lovely . We have used it often and it is easy to book .

We stayed at the Station Hotel at Carlisle once but we were travelling by train. It was nice.
I would second New Lanark.

The Westmorland Hotel behind Tebay Services is really nice.
Much better than you would expect from a services hotel but then the services themselves are excellent.
Floradora9 can you remember which Premier near Carlisle you stayed at please? There are 2 or 3 at different M6 junctions around Carlisle and we stayed in one a few years ago which was the worst Premier by far we have ever stayed in.
It would be good to know because Carlisle is a good stop for us on our way to Scotland from Wirral.

I’ll second this. Don’t tell everyone, but they do excellent brunch, sandwiches and coffee. We now go there instead of the general service station. Waiter service, comfortable seats, clean loos, lovely surroundings and parking directly outside.
You just drive through the service station car park.
It might be a bit too soon for the mileage from Manchester, the North Lakes Spa Hotel at the Penrith junction is also lovey and very well appointed.

Thank you for that information about the Westmorland Hotel J52. Didn’t know that but we will definitely try it on our next trip.

Thanks all for your suggestions! I think Cumbria will be too early in the journey for us, although the venues sound lovely. New Lanark sounds promising. 👍😎

We live in Moffat, a pretty conservation town less than a mile from the A74(M) and about 2 and a half houre away from Loch Tay. There are many hotels and guest houses and plenty of places to eat, as well as much local history and places to visit.

New Lanark is on my list to visit.

New Lanark is lovely and a great addition to your holiday in either direction, at just about a good midway distance. Tebay, (Westmorland) is our go to coffee stop on our way North from Greater Manchester. Cairn Lodge is also the same group as Tebay, but not a stop we have made yet. Enjoy Scotland.
