We did a similar cruise with P&O in February 4 years ago. The Norwegian people were friendly and scrupulously polite. Yes, it was cold but with suitable clothing and waterproof, lined boots we were comfortable. Fortunate to see the Aurora on land and at sea. There is something magical about standing in the snow in a very dark spot and seeing the sky lighten before a fabulous light show. We were treated to the show on four different nights. Wonderful. Announcements came over the tannoy system when the Aurora was active. I hope you get to enjoy a similar, magical experience.

Suzieque66 Many cruise ships use liquid natural gas which is considered eco friendly.

From 2026 there will be an electric ferry running from Newcastle to Stavanger and Bergen, so you can pop your electric car on board and have a guilt free road trip around Norway.

Our son lives in Oslo so we are very much looking forward to taking a car over, I’m sure he is already working on the shopping list!

Cruise ships will soon be banned as they do a lot of damage to the environment.. Norway have protestors with placards telling visitors to GO HOME and may use the Orange powder to throw at you... We used to cruise often and did not realise the damage the Black Carbon does to our lungs and the planet... we no longer cruise...

Do you fly?
Do you drive?
Or do you not travel full stop ?

So if we cannot cruise and cannot fly and have to use electric cars, how are we meant to travel. Is the train ok?

We’ve just come back from a cruise in the fjords with Havila ? It’s very eco and does what the hurtigruten do visiting every little port. It a posh ferry and small so people come and go while others stay on for the return trip. We didn’t see northern lights but didn’t expect to. It was light at 1am .

We went with Hurtigruten, can't see them banning these boats as they deliver stuff to small towns. Very cold, I borrowed some of DDs skiing gear. They woke us up via the little radio in our cabin when the lights arrived during the night. Excellent cruise, we had to use hand gel whenever we came aboard after being on shore. Also had to use it when entering the dining room, this was years before covid!

How lovely. I would love to see the Northern lights and you will have a really good vantage point. It will be spectacular, make sure you take heaps of photos!

Yes my late husband and I did it years ago and we loved it but the problem was my late husband kept falling asleep as the drone of the ship made him so relaxed that he fell asleep.

Please don’t worry about this, I have not heard of any orange paint being thrown at tourists.

We did a Norwegian cruise in April, there were no protests or signs in any ports.

You do see the occasional sign in Oslo.

The ships tannoy will alert you if there is an aurora.

Who are you sailing with?

Cheesey Fri 12-Jul-24 11:55:33

Just back from a 7 day Fjords cruise with Saga. Our first ever cruise.
Beautiful scenery especially sailing down the Fjords to each destination.
Different time of year but the weather wasn’t great for us. We loved the cruise experience. 5 star luxury, very comfortable cabin, amazing staff.
We didn’t experience any protestors or indeed any negativity from locals at all.
We would love to do a Northern Lights cruise and would be interested in hearing about your experience.

DH's aunt went on a similar cruise earlier this year. Nice cruise but no Lights - so be prepared! She said it was very cold.

You can get a phone app that will alert you if an aurora is likely. You might find that useful, although the ship will presumably use something of the sort. It's called Aurora Watch UK so isn't designed for Norway. However, as well as the UK alerts you can look at a map which covers a wider area of the globe and shows where an aurora might be seen.

We have booked a trip up to search for Lights! Were you warm enough onboard? and was the sea rough?

Sounds awesome! I did a similar cruise last year, and it was incredible. Make sure you pack warm clothes and layers—Norway in November can get pretty cold. Also, the best views of the Northern Lights are usually away from city lights, so keep an eye out for dark spots on the boat.

Hi, just booked a cruise to Norway in November to see Northern Lights. Has anyone been on a similar cruise? Comments, tips would be appreciated.
