What to do in Vienna?

DH and I are travelling to Vienna for his upcoming 60th. I know there are a lot of museums (and we are planning on visiting a couple), but any recommendations for other things to do/see? We are there for 4 days.

There will be plenty of concerts, and a visit to the homes of some of the famous composers that are museums now is indicated unless classical music bores you, but then you would hardly have chosen Vienna to go to, would you.

The opera, Spanish Riding School, any amount of churches or a visit to the Vienna woods.

Or you could take a day trip to Budapest.

Depending on when you are travelling I recommend a trip to one of the heuriger inns in the Vienna woods. Check the Vienna tourist sites first as I think they close in early November. Great for early vintage wine which I remember as being quite potent! And usually good local food is served too. Enjoy- it’s a beautiful city

Morning concert at opera house
Training session at Hof Reitschule

Both cheaper and quicker than whole opera or Spanish Riding Shool show and honestly just as good.

Don't miss the sacher torte.

DH really enjoyed River boat trip. The Klimt frieze in the Belvedere is amazing. The MAK – Museum of Applied Arts - is an amazing arts and crafts museum if you are interested in the Bauhaus movement etc

I think the other posts have pretty much covered all the attractions, especially as you only have four days.
I went there about 35 years ago. It is a great place to visit. Have a lovely holiday.

You could listen to some Johann Strauss or watch The Third Man before you go to get you into the zone.

Definitely extraordinary suggestions to follow.

A side trip to Salzburg, to Restaurant Ikarus, in the Salzburg Heliport is another highly suggested splendid lunch if time permits.

Don’t forget to have some delicious apple strudels!
The cafes are amazing.
And the traditional food is delicious.

If you like war architecture, the flak towers are very interesting!

And the stumble stones are worth looking out for.

Hope you're not going for a while yet - the flooding looks bad and parts of Vienna are under water.

Check out whether there is a concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. They are amazing and it’s lovely to see them perform in their home city.

If you are interested in the Spanish Riding School, when we visited several years ago you could pay to go to a morning rehearsal, which is much cheaper than an evening performance, and is also useful if you have too many other things you want to do in the evening.

Sorry - just seen that someone else has already suggested this!

For a bit of totally non improving fun there is always the Prater - a sort of fancy park cum fair right in the middle of Wien. www.praterwien.com/en/home

Go and see the municipal incinerator, Spittelau, designed by Hundertwasser! It’s what municipal “works” should be! c20society.org.uk/building-of-the-month/spittelau-incinerator-vienna#dismiss-cookie-notice

I can't believe no-one else has reported the major flooding today in several central Europe countries including Austria's capital Vienna..

We were in Vienna a few years ago, spent a lot of time exploring the city on the brilliant tram network (the Metro is great but you can't see anything!). We enjoyed the views from the Big Wheel in the Prater and we also did the Sewer Tour, in homage to The Third Man.

It's a great city, and I'd happily live there if I could!

Yes, the flooding is bad. I was just about to say this myself.

I quite enjoyed a lovely little musical garden, cant remember the name, where you could play a melody by stepping on certain areas in the garden, markets and and of the Opera.

My youngest GD is named Vienna- i love it, very unusual, and no, her parents have never been there.

Oreo: Freud's desk is in his London house in Maresfield Gardens. I don't suppose he left his cigars behind when he left Vienna to escape the Nazis.

A wonderful place to visit. All the suggestions are excellent and I think I ride on the Prater wheel is a must. There are also beautiful gardens in Vienna. Have a great time.
