DH and I are travelling to Vienna for his upcoming 60th. I know there are a lot of museums (and we are planning on visiting a couple), but any recommendations for other things to do/see? We are there for 4 days.

Morning concert at opera house
Training session at Hof Reitschule

Both cheaper and quicker than whole opera or Spanish Riding Shool show and honestly just as good.

Depending on when you are travelling I recommend a trip to one of the heuriger inns in the Vienna woods. Check the Vienna tourist sites first as I think they close in early November. Great for early vintage wine which I remember as being quite potent! And usually good local food is served too. Enjoy- it’s a beautiful city

There will be plenty of concerts, and a visit to the homes of some of the famous composers that are museums now is indicated unless classical music bores you, but then you would hardly have chosen Vienna to go to, would you.

The opera, Spanish Riding School, any amount of churches or a visit to the Vienna woods.

Or you could take a day trip to Budapest.

Definitely a tour of the opera house, very interesting especially the vast back stage. Also went to the cafe/restaurant that was supposed to be the home of the sachertorte and was very disappointed, it was dry without much taste and I was so looking forward to it.

Visit Freud's apartment.

Will there be a cigar on his desk?🤪

We managed to hear the Vienna Boys Choir while we were there

A ride on the Prater wheel is spectacular. I did it in a blizzard, I think I was the only one (daft enough to be) on!

I think the other posts have pretty much covered all the attractions, especially as you only have four days.
I went there about 35 years ago. It is a great place to visit. Have a lovely holiday.

You could listen to some Johann Strauss or watch The Third Man before you go to get you into the zone.

Yes!

Sounds great, I’ve always wanted to go there as Dad’s family a few generations back came from there.
I also love the song, Oh Vienna! ❤️

Yes I forgot the Spanish Riding School - I loved it and I am not a "horsey" person.

St Stephen's Cathedral

Definitely Hotel Sacher for a slice of real Sachetorte, Demel's Cafe, Schloss Schon Brunn. Vienna is very walkable. St Stephen's Cathedral. Get out to the Vienna Woods. Visit the Spanish riding school.

I'm envious. It's sixty years since I visited Vienna, not so very long after Russia withdrew from its occupation of the city. I did love the trams - remember this was a time when British cities has scrapped this mode of transport. I got the best haircut of my life there too!

Will the Christmas markets have started? Each district has one and the first opens on Nov 8th. They are pretty special.

Marmin Thu 12-Sept-24 09:22:38

In contrast to all of the culture a ride on the Prater ferris wheel is pretty special. As featured in the classic film The Third Man.

Have a fab time.

We saw a wonderful performance of Hansel and Gretel at the Volksoper. It was just as I imagined it. I also recommend coffee and cake, and hot chestnuts from street sellers. Lovely city.

Another recommendation here for the Schonbrunn Palace and the Opera House, even if you don't actually want to sit through an opera.

Thank you everyone for your recommendations.

We liked Belvedere Palace which houses the famous Kiss by Klimt. Schönbrunn was busy when we went in the morning, and there were no tickets available until 3pm. Be prepared by booking online first. St. Peter's Church was breathtaking. We saw a Marionettenspiel of the Magic Flute, had coffee and cake in Demel's and did a bus tour.
This was in 2022.

There is also the Natural History Museum, right opposite the Art History Museum. I also liked Haus Wien, a highly eccentric building with deliberately uneven floors, and the Sezessiongebaeude (paintings by Klimt). Also the Belvedere, a palace with a lovely art collection, and the Hofburg (the royal palace), and St Stephen's cathedral in the centre.
