Outer clothes for a winter holiday in a cold country!

Thank you so much everybody. I am much obliged for all your hints and tips. I feel much more confident now about what to wear and how to manage things.

I typically wear a down gilet, nipped in waist, jumper under - all winter. Jacket with hood, over in cold weather. Layers work well.

Gilets are warm, available in many colours, some have hoods. Pack well.

Believe me, you will need those winter clothes in Budapest in December. Lovely place but oh so cold. The return flight, the temperature was-15. We skidded across the runway taking off.

you can get battery operated clothes, waistcoats, jackets, trousers and socks no need for ov er heavy clothes wear layers.

Exactly what I was going to suggest- they usually don’t stop you carrying your coat over your arm. You can unlace your walking boots and slip them off once you’re seated.

(I’d written goat for coat - they might object to that!)

Personally, we found Bucharest & Brasov, Romania colder than Budapest, Hungary.

We always "layer" so that if we feel warm, we go to the restrooms and peel off a layer or two and carry in our backpack or big bag.

Best is a "puffer" and they reduce the number of layers, one might require with a woolen coat.

We use "Panama Jacks" (brand) of construction workers boots similar to a Miltary boot with faux / fake fur lining and wool socks ..

So nice and toasty however, comfortable.

And durable if snow is encountered. Brasov had quite a bit of snow ..

Last time I was in Budapest (and Prague) I saw quite a few older ladies in real fur coats.

Why are you taking a big coat and big boots? It's not The Arctic....Layers are better. Warm jacket not coat and short lined boots with foot warmers. Gloves hat scarf in case. Agree with other person..shops/hotels etc are very warm.Love Budapest enjoy

My daughter is in Budapest right now, part of her ‘Backpacking around Europe’ . It’s jolly cold! I hope she is able to move further South again before it snows. She has just bought herself a Winter Jacket in a Charity Shop there.

As others have said wear the Winter clothes, you will probably need them when you land back in the U.K.

Thanks for the hints and tips. I wondered about wearing my hiking boots. I suppose I'm just getting a bit stewed up really, thanks very much anyway.

I have the type of padded coat that rolls up and can be used as a pillow on the plane. I take a pac a mac that goes over it if it's wet.

Wear them.
Simple really

I can't really see a problem. We flew to Vienna in December for a week with cabin luggage only.
I wore my big Seasalt coat over 2 jumpers and just stripped off at the airport and again on the plane. I wore my ankle boots and kicked them off during the flight.

When we fly to the Canadian Rockies to ski we wear our hiking/winter boots on the flight, along with our ski coats. We take our coats/heavy boots off and put on slippers (from our carry bag) for the flight.

We wear thin down gilets under our ski coats, good on the plane and with jumpers as we don't wear ski coats apart from on the slopes.

Budapest is cold but hotels and public buildings are ridiculously warm!
Do you mean walking boots and down type jackets?
Or are you talking fashion boots and overcoats?

The coldest temperature I have arrive in was minus 15 in Finnish Lapland.
We wore our walking boots to travel, carried our coats in the airport and stored them in the overhead lockers on the plane. Scarves, hats and gloves at the ready in our cabin bags.
