Mosquitoes - bracelets or sprays????

We'll soon be on our way to OZ/NZ by way of Singapore. Our Singapore hotel is by the riverside and I want to enjoy a ride on the river and a stroll in the evening without getting bitten alive. Recently an advert for mosquito bracelets popped up on Facebook. They look like a plaited band worn around the wrists that allegedly keeps the mozzies away. Has anyone ever tried these? Or would I be better sticking with a spray?

I always take some sort of spray repellent if going anywhere with mozzies. Seems to work fine.
Plus of course a tube of Anthisan for any bites that happen anyway!

I'm getting every anti mosquito spray and device possible. Where we're going the mosquitos carry malaria, zika virus and other nasties. This is one of the holidays that looked fun when booked months ago but which is seeming less attractive as we get nearer to departure!!

Awww sorry ALLIRA...

Thanks for all replies. Lots to think about. We'll be doing a cruise around NZ so hope the sea air might blow the mozzies away.

Rosiebee, we're in NZ at the moment (North Island), and I hate to tell you, but it's the worst year we've ever known for insect bites. Whenever we ho anywhere near water we are eaten alive! We've been using sprays, but haven't tried the bracelets. On the plus side, it's a beautiful summer!

I am super ocd about mossies lol I use lemon shower gel, shampoo and body moisturiser. I spray the room
and bedclothes with a few drops of lemon oil mixed with water before going out in the evening. I spray into the air in the bathroom and shut the door. I wear a bracelet and also spray pulse points. I used to be eaten alive now I only get around 2 bites over a 2 week period.

I've yet to find anything that sees them off.
Is it mainly females they bite?

I read a teaspoon of marmite is good...once a day....then l read High strength vitamin B tablets are good (1 a day). They did work . I bought mine in Tescos. Must be high strength. Start taking as soon as you can so it gets into your system. When l went to Mexico I bought the bands but still got bitten .

Neither Marmite nor Vit B worked on me โ˜น

No, me neither. I've tried almost everything under the sun. The Avon Skin So Soft used to work well for me, but then they changed the formula and it didn't work as well.

We must be very sweet ๐Ÿ˜

Oh yes, I am basically an all-you-can-eat buffet for mozzies, midges and other biting critters! And I react really badly to the bites, so I invariably end up needing antibiotics too. I still have scars from where I was badly bitten in Spain any years ago. I had to go to the doctor when I got home and he thought they were burns because they looked so bad.

I ho away 6+ times a year and always get bitten, my partner never!! I take antihistamines, use Avon skin so soft and the plaited bracelets. I also spray room and myself with citronella spray. Last hols only got 4 bites in a month, best yet. Not sure what it is about me l, and not my partner, that they like but I wish they'd go feast elsewhere. I've been home a month and still have scabs as keep knocking them off when I shower. But I enjoy my trips non the less, just hope to ho on one and not get bitten even once ๐Ÿคž Think the bracelets helped me have less bites this time ๐Ÿค”

We always had some antihistamine on hand and my preferred one is 'Piriton'
Yes, definitely take anti-histamine with you.

I did know someone who said she started taking a dose each day, starting a week before she went but I've never tried it, so not sure if I'd recommend that. She did say that, like me, insects always made a beeline for her (excuse the pun) and she, too, reacted badly.

Some people never get bitten or don't react anyway.

I have lived in Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia for more years than I can remember! Also have been to NZ travelling for 3 months in a camper van. Our go to against mossies would definitely be a spray containing 'DEET'. Have tried bracelets and found they were okay..ish. We always had some antihistamine on hand and my preferred one is 'Piriton'. (it doesn't make you drowsy) If bitten and you are desperate to scratch I found the best cream was 'Mopiko' which is very expensive to buy here as it is only online. I have a stash of it brought over by friends from Asia! where it is really cheap so you will manage to buy it in Sing. Actually Singapore is the least of your worries as all houses, gardens, buildings etc have to be 'fogged' by law very frequently so doubt you will get bitten there unless you go into the jungle. I must add that I am extremely attractive to mossies and midges and my worst of all nightmare is the West Coast of Scotland so I go well armed with all of the above....oh & by the way I am Scottishgrin

A chemist recommended that I take antihistamine tablets for a week before I went away and it did seem to work, although I used a roll on deterrent too. If I were you Iโ€™d try the bracelets too. Hit the little b*****s from all directions!

frenchie3 Sun 09-Feb-25 15:08:57

I live in France and during the summer, it is a nightmare, trying to escape mozzies. I have tried bracelets and found them to be useless. Creams and sprays are much better.

Shantygirly Sun 09-Feb-25 15:03:28

After suffering year in, year out on holidays abroad, when despite spraying myself I would end up with huge itchy weeping lumps from mozzie bites I started to take anti-histamine tablets a few days before going away. It worked a treat, never had a problem after that.

Aveline Sun 09-Feb-25 15:01:52

After I read this thread I ordered the bracelets and sprays. Also after bite creams. Can't be too careful where we're going next month.

chrissie13 Sun 09-Feb-25 14:59:44

I am extremely allergic to mosqiuito bites, and if you do happen to be bitten I would highly recommend getting a Bite Relief Click-It device. It spreads the poison and stops the bite from itching, works like a miracle as long as you zap it immediately or very soon after.

Spray yourself with Avon's Skin So Soft dry oil spray. It's brilliant.

4allweknow Sun 09-Feb-25 14:55:20

Tried various bracelets as people kept telling me about how effective they were. Not so for me, spray every time.

grandtanteJE65 Sun 09-Feb-25 14:02:53

If you are like me, either will be a waste of money!

Wear a long sleeved high necked thin shirt when you go out in the evening, or near water at any time of day, and provide yourself with whichever across the counter antihistamine you usually use to combat the itch.

Grantanow Sun 09-Feb-25 13:08:57

I use both and I spray the hotel room including bathroom and use a plug in vapouriser. Renew spray on ankles and wrists every day.
