Hi. We are going on a P&O cruise to Norway in September, and the first port of call is Haugesund. I gather the town itself is not very interesting, so I have been looking at shore excursions. Two of the cheapest are to the Rising Tides and another one to a Viking settlement. The latter sounds a bit more strenuous for walking. Has anyone done either of these? Alternatively there is a HO-HO bus, but by all accounts this is a waste of money. Any other suggestions appreciated.

You really don’t need to pay a tour guide for Haugesund.

We just got off the ship and walked over the bridge to the beautiful sculptures.

It was a lovely walk through traditional wooden houses along the edge of the fjord.

Lots of places to stop and take in the views and a public loo around the halfway mark.

The walk is level, there is nothing much a guide can tell you that you cannot read on your phone.

It is not possible to get lost, we walked for around 3/4 hours but at a gentle pace.

I have been to the Viking Settlement, ground is a bit uneven, slightly hilly.

I think how much you get out of it will depend on how good your guide is

We walked around the town on a Sunday when a lot was closed. We found it interesting to window shop and walk.

We visited the Marilyn Munroe statue and the pink church.
We found a lovely coffee shop to the right of the pink church and across a green....It looks like it was once the church hall. Home made scones and jam at a very reasonable price.
Some people walked up to the monument and others to the rising tide statues. Depends how fit you are.
We never bother with ship excursions unless we have credit to spend. There are plenty of companies at the dock you can use.

Thanks for the replies. We will also be there on a Sunday. I think I'll forget booking anything and we'll take it as we find it when we get there.

We found the walk up over the bridge quite an effort, especially my brother with a walking stick. There is a bus to town from the port, payable. There are walking maps available when you get off, beware though that the distances are from town, not the port.
