The North of England - Part 2

Hi everyone. Way back, on this thread, I asked for tips for sightseeing and things to do on a trip to the North of England.

It's a good while ago now, but we went last September and it was a great success. So I wanted to thank everyone for their contributions, many of which I included in the itinerary.

growstuff recommended a diversion to Chester, once in Liverpool. I had included this in my plans, but DH, despite being a died-in-the-wool Latin teacher for 40 years, opted to stay in Liverpool an extra day as he is also a Beatles fan, like most Germans of his age. And he has seen plenty of amphitheatres in his life!

Casdon recommended Housesteads/Vercovicium and preferred it to Vindolanda. I had planned for Vindolanda to be the highlight of the tour and it certainly was! Actually, we got to Housesteads in a very cold wind and had to climb up a very steep hill. It was very well presented, once you had negotiated around the sheep! But Vindolanda was even better presented; no hill to climb; there were little bollards which, when you pressed a button, explained the history and layout in any of 6 languages (very rare in the UK!) It was accessed through a charming little garden and had a nice café.

MiniMoon recommended Alnwick Castle. We managed the castle, but didn't have time for the garden as well.

Casdon also mentioned "fabulous castles". We actually stayed one night in a genuine castle near Hexham which was quite an adventure!

Dee1012 mentioned Lindisfarne. We were lucky with the tides and got to spend a whole afternoon there. We could see Bamburgh Castle across the water but didn't manage to fit that in as well.

Galaxy mentioned Segedunum in Newcastle. We did spend some time in Newcastle, but took the opportunity to see the Castle, the Black Gate and the Cathedral. Also - it rained while we were there!

Sago recommended Boroughbridge, the Roman Camp at Pickering, and Ripon. We didn't manage the first two, although we did do Pickering castle and looked at the steam trains. Ripon wasn't really on our route.

I was cross that we didn't think to try the kippers suggested by AreWeThereYet - also the crab sandwiches on Holy Island which are supposed to be fantastic (they had sold out!)

We stayed 3 nights in Whitley Bay and made good use of the Metro as suggested by Glorianny, including Newcastle, the very impressive Arbeia site in South Shields, then back to Whitley Bay on the Tyne ferry to North Shields which was included in the Metro day ticket price!

Didn't make Beamish ( Jjan1, Galaxy and AreWeThereYet) and whilst we passed Hexham, we didn't go into the town itself.

There were several warnings about the weather, and we would have been equipped for this anyway, but we were really lucky - especially in the Lake District where we experienced tee shirt weather.

On re-reading the thread, I realise there was so much we couldn't fit in, but I think we did really well for the 2 weeks we spent there.

That's enough for one post - I'll thank a few more people in the next one.

How lovely, thank you for the update.
There is always something new to discover “up north”.

Stansgran, obviously knows her way around and recommended among other things Durham. I think this was my favourite place of all, even though we only managed a couple of hours there and the Cathedral was already partly cordonned off for Evensong.

MaizieD 's suggestions of Barnard Castle, Raby Castle and Binchester all sounded right up our street, but we couldn't squeeze them in .

grannysyb mentioned Cragside, which I had down as a must see, but in the end it was between Lindisfarne and that, and we chose LIndisfarne.

*Cressy" suggested Robin Hood's Bay which we did visit and despite the very long steep trek down and up, were very glad we did!

Greyduster recommended the Peak District but as we were flying to and from Manchester that was out of the way entirely, but I on reading through this, I am beginning to wonder if I can't persuade DH to go again - maybe a little further South.....

Bella23 mentioned Carlisle. Funny story there: We had to get from Hexham to Kendal, and could have gone via Carlisle or across the mountains. I chose the scenic route and it was horrific - we were driving through the clouds with a visibility of about 5 ft! Fortunately our hire car was a VW, like ours at home, so I knew where to find the foglights! Should have taken the Carlisle route!

Serendipity22 recommended Haworth, which I really did want to see, but planned the route wrongly for that - went directly Manchester - York - Scarborough. Had to double back a bit to see any of the Yorkshire Moors which was well worth it!

Cabbie21 and Rosiesmaw were quite right when they said we'd need more than the 2 weeks.

I looked into joining English Heritage and National Trust as Grannyjacq1 recommended, but in the end I wasn't sure which sites we would manage to see and didn't think that it was enough to warrant the two passes. As it was, we got quite generous pensioners' concessions almost everywhere.

Also many thanks to the following but we didn't make these either.

Boolya - Darlington
Crenniemac Trough of Bowland
Lynn4 - Lancaster
Krsmum - The Old Wellington pub in Manchester
justanovice - Ravenglass
Turfmop - Jorvik (butt we did do the Minster), Slavery Museum Liverpool

and many more!

sandelf said: "do not underestimate how windy it can be up along the wall!!!"

Oh yes!

Mirren and Harris27 are obviously proud of their home county - and rightly so!

Cheryl1959 spoke of walking the Hadrian's Wall path - something we should have done 20 years ago!

Dizzyribs wrote a long post, many of her ideas we did actually do.

#####

All in all I was very pleased with my planning - thanks to the recommendations of Gransnetters.

I hope that others can benefit from the original thread with its wonderful suggestions and the enthusiasm of the ladies from Northumberland, Yorkshire and Lancashire.

Thank you all once again.

Ah bless you. I love talking about the North East so it was no hardship for me grin

Oy! Some of us were from Co. Durham😂

It sounds as though you had a wonderful, if exhausting trip. Sorry about the weather…

JackyB, if the castle you stayed in near Hexham was Langley Castle, you were quite close to my house. Christmas afternoon tea there is wonderful.
I'm so glad your trip was successful. You didn't miss anything in Carlisle, as with all towns and cities these days the town centre is pretty woeful.

It was! One night there cost as much as three nights anywhere else but it was great fun and included a guided tour for guests after breakfast.

One thing I wished I knew more about was Scottish history, because even though we didn't cross over into Scotland, so much of the 11tn and 12th centuries were taken up with the fighting in the border and it all got rather confused in my head!

Oh I had my honeymoon night at Langley Castlesmile
