Drottningholm Palace - with the most amazing theatre - still using all the old machinery. Guided tours (in season) are in English sometimes. We went off season (but luckily a caretaker was there and very obliging). I'd love to go back.

We went to a lovely restaurant nearby - will try to remember its name.

A boat trip round the archipelago is a really good day out. We booked lunch on the boat, which ensured us a seat.
Also Skansen island where there is an open air museum. Traditional houses and people doing craftwork.
The underground is also a must, it’s an art gallery.
The Vasa museum of course.
If you have a car just head out to the forest for a quiet time and enjoy ‘the nature’.
Or maybe a day trip to Åland, a Finish island.
Thinking I must go back!

Definitely the Vasa Museum and a boat trip round the archipelago of Stockholm.

Check with the locals about the best boat trips. There were several routes when we went.

Just so you know: Roskilde is in Denmark, not in Sweden, and I cannot guess what Norah meant.

Legoland is in Denmark too, as it was a Dane who invented Lego.

We went to Denmark and took the train to Sweden Malmo across the bridge.

Lucky you - Stockholm is a great city to walk around, with such interesting architecture. We really liked:
Vasa (Ship) Museum
Fotografiska Museum - contemporary photography exhibitions but with a great cafe with amazing views across the water (horrible expensive of course - but everything is!)
Stockholm City Hall - astonishing gold mosaic ball room (you have to book a tour)
The Stockholm City Library is amazing, but fortunately, I think it’s closed at the moment for renovation. Seems like a funny place to visit. I know it’s an amazing building.
We took the train from Stockholm to Copenhagen (guess you can also do it from Malmo) - if you’ve ever watched The Bridge, you might enjoy making this journey.

PS will you be there for Midsummer? That’s a really big thing in Sweden and it’s worth trying to get out to join the celebrations.

I stayed in Copenhagen for a week and did a trip to Roskilde. It is a small town on the sea a short train journey along. It has an amazing Viking ship in a dedicated museum. Malmo was a short sea trip over from Copenhagen ... back in 1970's it was a jetboat? no bridge then

Thank you for some great suggestions. I had not thought of the library and booking a theatre night, also booking lunch on a boat trip is a great idea. We have been to Malmö and love the city so we can revisit some places and hopefully take a ferry to a danish island called Bornholm. We are going at the end of June so will miss midsummer, perhaps another time 😃

I believe there is a tourist city attractions pass available to buy in Stockholm so I will look into that too.

We lived in Sweden for 16 years, living in a beautiful village , Vansbro, in Dalarna , translates to The Dales. If you and have time to go there it is beautiful, and is a well known holiday area. Other people have given you some good suggestions as to places to visit. The changing of the guards at the royal palace is worth a visit. How I envy you, must go back, maybe next year

I've visited Malmo twice and loved it. My mum was Swedish and she lived there as a child, she came to England in 1939 for a holiday then war broke out, at the end of the war she met my dad and never went back to Sweden. By the time they could afford foreign holidays she was scared to go back as she didn't want it to have changed. But she loved all the photos I took, pointing out places she remembered.

Roskilde and Legoland are both in Denmark but you can catch the train n across the bridge.

Go on FB and ask the Swedes, they will be really helpful and tell you all about the transport system and what cards to buy when you get to the airport.

I agree re underground stations, though some are more amazing than others - I especially recommend the Kungsträdgården station (entrance nearest the National Art Museum - which has a v good cafe btw)
Rosendahl cafe on Djurgården after a walk around the island?
Trip out to bits of the Archipelago/lunch always seems to be a hit
Eating one’s main meal (dagensrätt) at lunchtime is a good idea from a financial point of view!

Some really good suggestions here, thank you all. In Stockholm we definitely want to see changing of the guards and the Vasa museum too, we also love art galleries. There is lots to see in Malmö so probably won’t go over to Denmark this time as we have already been to Copenhagen.
