I've never had a kindle but feel it would be a good purchase for a long trip ( couple of months) away. I can't tell if this is super outdated option or a good one that will allow me to focus just on reading, no ads, emails etc. Thoughts,?

I’d take both! iPad for keeping contact with people and Kindle just for reading. I do have the Kindle app on my phone and iPad but I find the lure of other websites too tempting. blush

Thanks that's really helpful to know. Can I ask which type of kindle do you have?

I bought a Kindle Fire in 2016 and still take it on holiday. It does everything and is cheaper than an iPad. I leave the IPad home!

It’s a Paperwhite, so it’s backlit for reading at night. It’s not a fancy one that you can do other things with, so fairly basic. My Dh had a very basic one and even that was good. Ime, they last for years. I’ve only ever had two, since not long after they were available. smile

I have both but the iPad wins as I rarely use the Kindle as I much prefare iPad.

I have a Kindle Fire, which is a bit like a mini simplified ipad.
Also a Kindle Paperwhite.
The Kindle Fire has a reader on it so you can read all your Kindle books but terrible glare in the sun and almost unreadable for me.
My Kindle paperwhite is ideal for all my books, I must have at least 500 books on there. No glare, easy to adjust size, brightness etc
Had both more than 15 years now. The Paperwhite still from when they'd just come out. Brilliant!

Kindle every time for me. It’s smaller than my iPad, backlit for night reading and slips into my cross body bag effortlessly. Smartphone is used for keeping in touch with family and taking photos so there’s absolutely no need for anything else IMO.

I also have a Kindle Fire tablet which I use daily (am writing this on it) but as someone said above it is not good for reading outside as the glare is terrible, so I also have a Kindle reader which is ideal for holidays.

I decided not to go for an iPad and got the Fire instead, which was a lot cheaper; have had the current one for about 5 years. Does internet, emails, faceBook, and obviously Gransnet, and I always take it on holiday

My Kindle paperwhite is my most important possession. It's absolutely only for reading. I use my mobile phone for all internet activities. I love to load up my kindle with tempting books before a holiday and have a special pouch in my handbag for it.

Thanks everyone, looks like with minimal exception, kindles are valued for reading.

The presentation and font is adjustable which is helpful too.

I love my kindle, it’s a holiday must have . For long haul flights I take my iPad and download films or series on it . Sometimes the inflight entertainment is rubbish or not working .

I would take both it might be worth subscribing to Kindle Unlimited as you can borrow 20 books at a time and it has a wide range of subjects . There are often very good deals for this . Also the Kindle paperwhite is great for reading in sunshine if that comes into the equation.

I have both Tablet and my beloved Kindle.
I had a new one for Christmas as mine was so old they have recently stopped supporting it (think it was about 16 yrs old). I got another Kindle Firewhite.
I think it's one of the best purchases I have ever made.
I don't use my Tablet very much now as my phone is so good. I doubt I will replace it , but I will always have my Kindle to read books on.

I’m with Floradora. I use my iPad for reading all the time except for reading outside which is hopeless because of the glare. Kindle is better for that. I prefer the iPad as the screen is bigger and my eyes need a large font.

I take a Kindle Paperwhite for reading and an iPad so I can read the newspaper, watch a movie (pre loaded) and send emails. You can read in the Kindle ap on the iPad but it isn’t good in the sun. Also, my kindle fits into my handbag so I take it everywhere.

As much as I love a 'proper' book, I wouldn't be without my Kindle now, especially for travelling. I'm a very quick reader and it means I can have as many books as I want with me.

I'd go for both if that's a possibility. Reading on an iPad uses a lot of battery, and iPads run out of power faster than Kindles as there is a lot going on in the background whether you are using them or not.

Kindles are significantly easier on the eyes (I have a Paperwhite) and pleasanter to read, plus you don't keep getting notifications flashing on the screen. Also, they are almost waterproof, so if you do drop it in the pool it has a better chance of survival than an iPad, which will definitely die.

If it's one or the other, an iPad obviously does more, so I'd go for that, but if there is budget and bag space for both, that would be ideal.

Kindle-lightweight, great for reading, backlit for reading in the dark or bright sunshine and battery charge lasts for ages as long as you have wifi switched off.

The two extra advantages of my new one, (I used to have a keyboard Kindle) are
1. It also allows me listen to kindle/audible books via bluetooth.
2. It has dark mode -white text on dark background. Less disturbing for DH when I’m reading in bed at night.
iPad/ipad mini? Good for all the things Kindle doesn't do.
Great for contacts, information, games and puzzles, reading ebooks, listening to audio books etc.
Weighs more, needs a bigger handbag, battery runs out faster, not good for reading in the sun.
Having both is a good option-and then, of course, there’s your phone.

Hi all, will definitely take an iPad or laptop. We are doing too much to be without one I think. But for reading for pleasure your feedback means will definitely invest in a kindle too. Huge thanks for your input
