Kefalonia;. Wondered why the gutters were so deep and why, for a Greek island it was so green. Soon found out. And we hadn’t taken raincoats with us…

Cornwall - never stopped raining the 2 weeks we were there. Many days it came down like stair rods. As it is a very long way from home, we won’t be risking going again.

Skye and Rannoch Moor were pretty 100% wet and my wipers conked out en route.

Ben Nevis and Fort William. It rained the whole time we were there.

Singapore during the Northeast monsoon season. It rains so hard you feel like you’re being pelted with pebbles, and it can fill a monsoon drain in minutes and sweep away anything unlucky enough to have fallen into it.

Other than that - Scotland!!

June 28, 2012 - Thunder Thursday in Newcastle upon Tyne. There are still videos of it online!

Aberystwyth. We were camping. It rained, heavily, for five days. The sort of horizontal rain that comes with a strong wind, we couldn’t see and could hardly stand upright outside on the dreaded walk to the toilet block. The tent leaked. Everything was soaked. Roads were flooded, the field a quagmire. We believed the forecast that said tomorrow would be better so stuck it out. Day six the rain stopped, we packed up, headed home. That was at least 56 years ago and I’ve never been there again!

Devon and also old Estapona in Spain.

We also arrived at the end of some monumental rainfall in Spain. We'd been offered an apartment of friends of friends in a pretty town called La Herradura. When we arrived floor of the ground floor flat, had water in it (tiles of course) which we took a broom to and swept out on to the patio, nothing unusual apparently, the floor dried out quickly. We were lucky and enjoyed good weather whilst we were there.

The wet season in Nigeria. The sea wall got washed away and a lagoon was breached in one season! Where we lived was only seven feet about sea level so that was interesting. 👀

Southwold. Seven solid days of rain. Awful. Worst holiday ever. Put us off for life.

M62 on the way west to Yorkshire. So fierce I couldn’t see the road ahead. I had no idea what traffic was behind or in front of me. It would have been dangerous to stop so I had to carry on. It was the most terrifying fifteen minutes of my life.

Norway. Torrential rain from East to West. It was August. We were driving from Sweden where we'd been to a wedding, camping and exploring as we made our way to Bergen for the ferry home.
We drove through the tunnels but couldn't put our tent up so had to rent chalets at night.

Malaysia!

St Lucia when a hurricane hit and flooded the hotel, never seen rain like it! The day before we noticed the boats being tied to palm trees so guessed it was forecast. It was quite good fun joining the staff in baling out and helping with the clean-up and meals. We couldn't fly home until two days later than planned.

Driving towards the lake district where we camped. The rain was so fierce that it knocked birds onto the road, and we stopped under a motorway bridge.

Nairobi 2019, horrendous we were worried our flight home next day wouldn’t happen.

Brazilian rainforest, but we were expecting it.

A toss up between Mauritius and Oban. Equally depressing rain for over a week in the tropics and rain for the entire time we were in Oban, only a few days, came down like cats and dogs and freezing in spite of being summer.

Malaga in late Feb about 10 years ago. We mistakenly thought it would be nice warm weather. It rained torrentially for 7 days and nights and caused substantial damage to nearby Torremolinos, where a walkway lined with small shops down to the promenade had parts of it washed away and the beach had whole chunks of it rearranged.
Never seen or heard rain like it.

North Wales - we were camping and kept saying we’d pack up when the tent was dry.
It wasn’t for a whole week so eventually gave up and packed it wet. Repitched in our back garden when we got home!

The worst rain I’ve encountered was when we were on the motorway coming back from the south of France. It was quite sudden, and terrifying, with a black sky, and spectacular thunder and lightning, the rain came down like a bucket being emptied. The traffic on the motorway completely stopped, it was unsafe to move.

Sri Lanka in the monsoon season!
